Is Boarding School the Best Education for Your Child

Schools nowadays just are not doing so well in educating our children. This is what a lot of parents seem to think. A school where all of the kids are required to abide by a code of behavior, similar to what parents normally expect such as courtesy, politeness, respect for each other and their parents, seem to make boarding school look like a good choice. Giving your children a good start in life, and a balanced education is very important to many parents. The better education that they get, the more doors it will open when it comes to future employment. Why don’t more parents take advantage of it? Before sending your child to boarding school you should consider the effect that it may have on your children.

Some boarding schools may have some very impressive academic standards, but how are their moral standards. Since children in boarding school live with their classmates 24 hrs a day, and they are often pressured to do things they would not normally do at home. Or they may be subject to bullies. Sometimes parents do not realize it until after their children have left boarding school. Usually by this time it is too late to correct matters. Do you realize that even the teachers can have an influence over your children?

Any school even boarding schools can have morally corrupt teachers who tend to abuse their position of authority. Quit a few can be cruel and harsh, while others even have exploited their students sexually. Most of the time these incidents are unreported. But there are teachers who train their children to become good productive members of society. In boarding schools students are under the constant control of their teachers. Since most of your child’s time is spent with the teacher they will most likely bend to the will of a teacher.

Unlike universities, boarding schools restrict the movement of children. These schools do not allow pupils to leave the school compound. You are still responsible for molding and training your children. It is not the schools job or responsibility. There are of course other alternatives to boarding school. You could arrange for private lessons to supplement what your child is not learning at school, or you can set aside time to tutor your child. Whatever you decide take the time to think things through thoroughly.

Do not be too quick to make a decision. Also if your child is old enough you may want to include them in the discussion. I feel that children should have a say in what happens to them as long as they are old enough to understand. Think for a minute if you really want your child to be away from you for months at a time. By the time your child returns home you may not even know them anymore. They could have a totally different personality.
