Homemade Games for Kids

Parents often hear the phrase, “I’m bored!” It’s sometimes hard to come up with fun and inexpensive activities for children. Kids don’t make up games and entertaining activities like they did in decades past. With the invention of video games, computers, and other electronic gadgets, today’s kids sometimes don’t have much of an imagination. Their imagination and creativity often require a little coaxing.

Spark your child’s imagination and quest for fun and creativity by introducing them to several new rainy day activities. These interesting and fun activities for kids will provide them with things to do other than play video games and watch television. Kids won’t want to wait for a rainy day to have fun with these amusing activities.

Fun With Invisible Ink

Kids love sending secret messages to their friends and family. A special pen containing invisible ink is not necessary in order to write secret messages. Kids can easily make their own invisible ink messages. All they need is a toothpick or a cotton swab, and lemon juice or milk. Onion juice also works very well, but it isn’t recommended due to the strong odor and fumes associated with onions.

When using lemon juice, either squeeze the juice into a bowl or use the bottled variety. Have your child dip a toothpick or cotton swab into the lemon juice and write a secret message. Set the paper aside to dry. The paper will appear to be blank, but when held against a window or in front of a light, the message will magically appear!

Invisible messages made using milk are viewed differently. After your child uses a toothpick to write a message using milk, allow the milk to dry. Reveal the message by rubbing the side of a sharpened pencil tip over the paper. Your child will be thrilled and amazed!

Marshmallow Towers

Before beginning, a word of caution – marshmallows have been associated with choking, so they should be consumed and used only by kids who are old enough to understand the danger of airway constriction. Older kids should also be supervised when eating or playing with marshmallows.

This is a cheap activity, especially when considering the cost of construction toys. All you need for this fun and entertaining activity is a bag of mini marshmallows, a box of toothpicks, and the desire to build and create. For a more eye-catching tower, consider using colored marshmallows and colored toothpicks. Be sure to buy extra marshmallows for snacking!

Have your child connect the toothpicks using the marshmallows. The structures can be simple or complex, and the possibilities are endless. Best of all, the materials can be used over and over. Just be sure to tightly seal the bag of marshmallows, and they’ll stay fresh and reusable indefinitely.

The Best Bubble Soap

Remember blowing bubbles as a child? Kids still love blowing bubbles with bubble soap. You can make your own fantastic bubble soap, but if you think good quality bubble soap is merely soap and water, you’re in for a bubble popping surprise.

To make high-quality homemade bubble soap, mix together two tablespoons of mild dishwashing liquid with one tablespoon of light corn syrup and a cup of water. This homemade bubble soap is considerably less expensive than store-bought bubble soap. Best of all, it works just as well, if not better.

Go outside and show your child how to blow oodles of bubbles using drinking straws, cookie cutters, and leftover bubble wands. You can also have fun making homemade bubble wands using pipe cleaners. Just bend them into the shapes you want, attach a pipe cleaner handle, and have fun blowing tons of bubbles.

Homemade Bathtub Crayons

What could be more fun for a kid than drawing pictures in the shower or bath? Colored bathtub crayons can be quite expensive, and they aren’t very long lasting. You and your child can make homemade bathtub crayons for pennies on the dollar, and you will both have fun in the process.

For this activity you will need powdered laundry soap, food coloring, water, and ice cube trays or candy molds. Mix together ½ cup of laundry soap with approximately 20 drops of food coloring. Gradually mix in drops of water until the soap turns to liquid. Blend the mixture well, and pour it into an ice cube tray or candy mold. Set it out in the sun for two or three days or until it completely hardens. Pop the soap out of the tray or mold, and have fun drawing in the tub or shower.
