Autumn
Autumn leaves dancing
Float softly on the quickening breeze,
Tiny ribbons of scarlet and gold
Drift slowly down..
Rustling a plaintive song of farewell.
The sighing wind
Combs its chilly fingers
Through the sleepy woods
Whispering its ancient song.
Across pale blue skies
Bleached of summers bright hue
Geese fly…loosed like arrows from a hundred quivers
Singing their mournful tune,
As the outflung limbs of the massy trees
Reach for the last precious moments of warmth
From summers fading light..
Cool tendrils of woodsmoke and mist
Enfold the woods…
In autumns heart
