Empty Nest Syndrome

Empty Nest Syndrome is a psychological disorder that occurs when a parent’s children have all grown into adulthood and moved out of the house. The loss of a child’s dependency on a mother or father can be quite devastating to a parent. Most parents don’t even realize how much their children’s maturity is going to affect them until the day comes for the children to leave.

Empty Nest Syndrome can occur with either parent, but it is most common among mothers. A depression and feeling of loneliness washes over the parent. Without their children there to guide and nurture, they are lost. This occurs because so many years were spent identifying themselves as a parent. Parents who were especially close to their children will suffer from Empty Nest the most.

There are serious side effects with this depression that should be treated and taken very seriously. While many people joke about Empty Nest Syndrome, it is no laughing matter for the parent going through it. Our western civilization cares less about extended families than other cultures, so Empty Nest Syndrome is more prevalent in countries like America. Our elderly are shuffled off to nursing homes; not revered and cared for by loved ones.

A similar condition to Empty Nest can occur when a close child becomes married. A mother or father, feeling they have lost their baby to someone else, may lash out or suffer from depression. It isn’t uncommon for a parent to unjustly distrust or disapprove of said son or daughter-in-law. The important thing is to keep oneself busy in order to fill the void that has been left by your children flying the nest.

A good way to prevent Empty Nest Syndrome in the future is by maintaining your identity now. While children may be the center of your world, be sure to take the time to enjoy your own life and pursuits. That goes for married couples as well- remember to stay a couple as well as Mommy and Daddy. Otherwise, once the children are gone, you will have forgotten who you are.
