Hairstyles for Prom
Romantic
The romantic look tends to go well with all body types although can tend to become childish on the very petite girl. It also goes well with a simpler style dress, one, perhaps, with cap sleeves and an unadorned silhouette.
To achieve this look, start by rolling all of your hair onto hot rollers, using larger rollers underneath to create body and medium rollers on the top layer to create soft waves. While hair is rolled, spray liberally with a lightweight hairspray. Let hair set in rollers until cool to the touch. When curls are set, use your fingers or a wide-toothed comb to separate and soften curls into waves; do not brush your curls. Randomly attach pastel flowers or ribbons throughout the curls and finish with a light mist of hairspray.
Glamour
Two looks for Old Hollywood glamour start with a straight part to one side and a gloss pomade. Smooth pomade through wet hair and blow-dry straight. From here you have two options. First is to leave hair straight and adorn with two jeweled pins above the ear on the parted side.
The second is to use the same pins to secure an up-do. Gather all of your hair into a low ponytail at the base of your head and then twist it up into itself. Use jeweled pins to secure any stray pieces and spray liberally with a firm hold hairspray.
The glamorous looks work well with a low neckline, off the shoulder styles, and sleek silhouettes. The long, straight style greatly compliments a long, slim body style, calling attention to the young lady’s height and creating a line from top to bottom. The up-do tends to flatter any body style but works very well to draw the eye up and create the illusion of height for both the shorter girl as well as a more heavily set girl.
Sexy
An up-do shows off lines in the face, neck and shoulders that are often hidden by loose down-styles, creating a sexy look. This look is not recommended for a thin girl who may be lacking in curves or for a girl with an elongated neck, as it will draw possibly unflattering attention to both of these qualities.
Comb wet hair forward and, using the handle of a comb or your pinkie finger, make a large zigzag part through the middle of your hair. Comb each side back and up into a high ponytail, secure with a plain, cloth-covered rubber band. Take a section of the ponytail, about an inch thick, and wrap it around the base of the ponytail, covering the rubber band, and securing with a bobby pin. Smooth mousse through to the ends of the ponytail and blow-dry straight. With a large barreled curling iron, curl one-inch sections and pin the ends back into the base. Use a small barreled iron to spiral curl any stray strands around the face and neck. Finish the whole look with a firm holding spray.
Exotic
The exotic look, naturally, goes best with an “exotic” dress, one with vivid colors, tropical floral patterns or adornments, or asymmetrical edging, for example. The best way to achieve this look is by adding brightly colored silk flowers with a “tropical” feel, such as orchids or hibiscus, to any of the looks presented above. To change the glamorous look to an exotic look, replace the jewels with a single orchid above the ear. Swap the ribbons of the romantic look for small hibiscus flowers.
