Maryland’s Vehicle Emissions Inspection Program

If you are a resident of Maryland, it is your responsibility to take your car to the Maryland’s Vehicle Emissions Inspection Program (VEIP) once every two years. The Emissions Inspection program is a plan by the state to improve the air quality of the environment. By getting your car inspected you are helping the state of Maryland protect the environment from polluted toxins that your car can produce.

You will receive a notice for your car to be inspected eight weeks prior to the deadline. You can bring your vehicle anytime before the date your car is due for inspection. Make sure you bring your notice with you. Once you arrive at the emissions inspection site, a technician will check your car for leaking fluids, excessive smoke, signs of tampering with the exhaust system, a gas cap, dashboard warning lights, and badly worn tires. The cost of the inspection is $14. Cash, credit cards, and personal checks are accepted. Once the inspection is over, you will receive a certificate if your car passes. If your car fails, you will be referred to the station representative. The station representative can discuss the results with you and point out the area(s) on your vehicle’s engine or emission control system to be checked and repaired.

To ensure that your car passes, make sure your vehicle is well maintained. Make sure your exhaust system does not leak or have any holes. Also, make sure no gas, oil, and coolant is leaking. Check your tires as well for baldness.
