Summertime Cold? Biaxin May Lead to a Speedy Recovery

It’s summer! The air is hot and humid, people around you are sunbathing and enjoying the pools, lakes and oceans. And here you lie in bed, stuck at home, exxagerated breathing, sinus pressure pain, ear pain and nasal passages that flows like the Amazon River. When considering treatment options, consult your physician regarding the use of Biaxin or Biaxin XL tablets or suspension formula. With appropriate dosing, monitoring of contraindications and knowledge of side effects, you may very well have found the key to a quick and speedy recovery and will be out enjoying the summer in very little time.

Biaxan, a product of Abbott Laboratories, was originally designed to treat conditions such as sinusitis, strep throat, middle ear infections, bronchitis, acquired pneumonia and even duodenal ulcers. Under the generic name of clarithromycin, Biaxin fights bacterial infections by halting bacterial growth within the body. It does not, however, cause infected cells to die. Instead, it prevents new growth thereby allowing the body’s natural immune system to fight the existing bacterial infection. For the treatment of ulcers, Biaxin should be therapeutically combined with Prilosec and Prevacid to ensure bacterial associated with the ulcers are eliminated.

Dosing of Biaxin tablets is standard in a 500 mg tablet, taken twice a day, over a seven to ten day period. The tablets should be consumed with food and 8 oz of water. Missed doses may be taken as soon as you become aware of the missing dose and then the next tablet should not be taken for an additional 5-6 hours. Suspension formulas are generally used for pediatric patients.

Biaxin, in the treatment of bacterial infections, does not come without side effects. However, most side effects will dissipate when therapy is discontinued. Common side effects may include nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, dyspepsia, headache and abnormal taste. Some patients may develop yeast infections. While these side effects are possible, it is important to remember these same symptoms may be the side effects of that actual bacterial infection and not related to drug usage. Additionally, for gastrointestinal pain, Biaxin XL is the better alternative to standard Biaxin tablets. If side effect syptoms are severe, consult your physician immediately.

As with most medications, there are contraindications to the use of Biaxin. Patients with allergice reactions to erythromyocin or other other related macrolides should avoid the use of Biaxin tablets. Additionally, Biaxin is classifed as a Category C drug for pregnancy meaning it is unknown what impact the drug may have on a fetus. As a result, Biaxin should only be used when no other alternate form of treatment is available. Patients with cardiac arrythmias or ventricular fibrillation should avoide the use of Biaxin as Biaxin may inhibit the metabolism of drugs utilized in the treatment of cardiac conditions. In rare cases, fatalities have been reported. And, finally, in patients with renal failure, Biaxin may be utilized however, because Biaxin is excreted through the kidneys and liver, dosing should be titrated to levels at 250 mg so as to not impact the patient’s standard renal care.

As with any disease, prevention is the key to maintaining good health. With bacterial infections, especially summer colds, the lingering of the symptoms can create misery during the most fun-filled months of the year. Allowing the body to naturally fight infection should always be the first line of defense however, when considering supplementing care Biaxen may aide in improving your condition and speed your way to a summer filled with fun. Consult your physicial for more information on treatment options.
