Summer Job Hunting in Huntington Beach

You worked hard this semester and now it’s summertime. You talk with your buddies and plan several trips to far and exotic lands. However, the only issue to resolve, is where are you going to get the money to fund these expensive getaways? The answer, is to look for a job.

In Huntington Beach there is only one place where everyone seems to go and that’s downtown, near the pier. Downtown Huntington Beach is bombarded with beachfront stores and trendy little nightspots. During the summers while I was in high school, I would work at the local surf shops. Surf shops are a great place to work because the hours are flexible and the people are extremely laid back. In fact, when the surf is good, nobody works. Available surf shop jobs are never posted, so just walk into the store and ask if they need help. Some of the more popular surf shops downtown are Huntington Surf & Sport, Infinity and Jacks.

Other places to work that offer a fun atmosphere are at restaurants. One can make good money from tips and the socializing aspect of the job is attractive to job seekers. The job pool for these positions is very large and most if not all restaurants require previous waiter/waitress experience. Again the best way to find restaurant jobs downtown is to simply walk-in.

Another area of Huntington Beach where one can find a summer job is at the new Bella Terra Mall. In fact this mall recently received a major face-lift. During the 80’s, this mall was prosperous and competing with the bigger Westminster Mall. But in the 90’s, the Huntington Beach Mall became obsolete and most stores closed shop. Now, the mall has been transformed into a gigantic outdoor pavilion where most well-know franchises have opened business.

If you prefer a job that’s not retail then consider working as a beach lifeguard. Every year, the city holds tryouts for lifeguard positions, where they chose the strongest and fittest candidates. The tryouts consist of activities such as running along the shore and swimming around the beautiful Huntington Beach Pier. The positions are limited and a small percentage of candidates actually get hired but it doesn’t hurt to try! Now you have the inside scoop on great places to work. Good luck in your job search and don’t forget to have a fun and safe summer!
