Three Websites to Help You Discover Events on Long Island, NY

Occasionally, while driving down one of the major roads in Smithtown, NY or any surrounding areas, I’ll notice a sign posted alongside the road, or taped to a thick tree or telephone pole. These signs let me know about town festivals, craft fairs, carnivals, and other events I find particular interest in. But relying on the chance of spotting these signs in order to plan my weekend activities is not efficient enough.

When I want to know about upcoming events on Long Island, there are three websites that I can count on to give me up-to-date, reliable information regarding all manner of events and attractions.

The first of these sites typically has the largest listing of events, Newsday.com. Newsday is Long Island’s main newspaper, providing a wealth of information on happenings on Long Island. To discover what future events may be taking place, simply go to Newsday.com, and find the “Events” link on the sidebar. From there, you can narrow your search to include such options as type of event; festivals, nightlife, museums, etc., and further narrow your search by selecting regional locations and date. For more specific results, you can even select events relating to kids, seniors, singles, and more.

The returned results will detail the date and location of the events, a short description, and any contact information if provided by the event poster.

Another site I have found to be very useful, often providing information on events not found on the Newsday site, is LongIsland.com. This site is comprehensive on all things related to Long Island, providing links and information on travel and tourism, shopping and dining, weddings and sports, and much more. For event listings, click on the “Events” option under the Entertainment heading.

Navigation is clean and simple. You’ll be presented with a long list of available links very specific to types of events, but for an overview, simply click on the ‘weekend events’ link. This will give you a complete list of all events in all communities on Long Island for about the next two months, but it is useful to check back about once per week, as new events are always being added and updated.

As with the Newsday site, you’ll find the date, location, and information about each event, often with website and contact information, and the option to email the information to a friend.

Similar to LongIsland.com in terms of content is another useful site, LongIslandBrowser.com. The amount of content can appear overwhelming at first, but you’ll soon find as you examine a few links that results are not completely comprehensive; rather, you’ll be presented with a selective list of notable links and locations. Still, the information provided is top-notch and will usually fulfill your needs.

For event information, select the link for ‘Communities’, and then navigate to “Long Island Community Events”. You’ll then be able to select a months worth of events by clicking on a specific month, as well as view past months events should you need to. Although the event listings on this site may a bit sparse, you’ll find that the information related to the events are the most detailed.

Between all three sites, you should have a more than adequate list of upcoming events on the island, and your weekend calendar will be filled with many exciting activities all year long.
