Not so, say critics of gem therapy. Some people say that there is no way a stone can actually make you feel better. This is called the placebo affect. The placebo effect is a perceived or felt improvement, but not from the treatment. The sense of well-being comes from the mind and believing they are doing something to improve their health. Other critics argue that gem therapy has no basis at all. Critics say there are no scientific studies that show that gem therapy really helps the wearer, most of it is only wishful thinking instead. Many people have a hard time thinking that something like a gemstone can actually improve their health at all.

Those who dismiss gem therapy also believe that even if gem therapy had certain healing powers, a small gem worn on a necklace or bracelet would not be sufficient enough to heal. Instead, the whole body would need to be covered in the gemstone to show any effect at all. Critics also say that crystals and other gemstones cannot possibly harness and direct energy at all. However, it is a known fact that some gems do in fact produce an electrical charge when compressed.
