Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Lately, we are finding out more information about various ailments that can affect us all. Irritable Bowel Syndrome are as it is called IBS, is one of those ailments that has become more and more popular today. We are finding out more about IBS and finding ways to treat it as well as notice the symptoms. Irritable Bowl Syndrome (IBS) is an ailment that primarily affects the gastrointestinal tract. This is mainly the colon. IBS is formerly known as Spastic Colon and Nervous Stomach to name a few. Only 15 to 20% of the population is effected, mainly effecting women.

Symptoms can range from mild to severe. It is important to note that if you are experiencing these symptoms you should see your doctor. The symptoms that are being experienced may be signs of a much more serious illness. Symptoms include abdominal cramping, pain, bloating, Diarrhea and constipation. There are some cases where Diarrhea and constipation happen together. Usually there is some degree of depression and or stress that is present in patients with IBS. The symptoms are enhanced from these factors and others such as a change in diet.

The causes of IBS are unknown. One thing that the medical community does know is that patients with IBS report changes in the perception of sensations in the colon. As well there is a physical change in the lining of the colon. Again what causes these changes is not known. One theory as to why IBS occurs is the large intestine may be more sensitive and responds very strongly towards stimulation.

In the past IBS was usually just passed off as a minor ailment and not looked at as seriously as it is now. Hence why there has been a change in the name. The Diagnosis is a series of exclusions of more serious problems. This is why it is very important that you speak to your doctor regarding this. Your doctor can prescribe for you a medication that can help you. Some patients seek Hypnosis, which can have a positive effect upon the illness. Also it is highly recommended that you incorporate more fiber into your diet. Caution, do this gradually, too much can exasperate your symptoms. The goal is to maintain a balance. Keep track of the foods that trigger IBS this way they can be avoided in the future and eat smaller portions. Large portions of food can over work you colon and trigger these symptoms. Last but not least try to reduce stress.
