Family Friendly Outing to Wilmington’s Haunted Ghost Walk in Coastal North Carolina

Wilmington, North Carolina is a city old and rich in history, built on pirates and sea captains. The Haunted Wilmington Ghost Walk is a walking tour offered by local actors who will recount the historical stories, well known and forgotten, and show places where people have encountered ghostly occurrences.

The tour is led by one of the six actors that take the groups around. These actors, ranging from one whom has been leading for 7 years since the tour began, to one who wears a pirate costume, are all trained and very amusing. They are able to captivate your attention and know the stories well. There are seven different routes, so if you’ve been on the tour before, tell them which one, and they will take you on a completely different track. The 1 1/2 to 2 hour tours will lead you around several blocks throughout downtown and the surrounding neighborhoods, so wear comfortable walking shoes. The tour guides will walk backwards up the hills and know all details of the stories and sightings by heart. The also describe which spots the tours have seen strange ghostly women or blue orbs after describing the background on each spot.

The stories range from pirates trying to escape, to jailbirds lost in underground tunnels, to dimes left around the house, to being buried alive, to ghosts refusing to leave their homes. All are true, some more chilling than others.

While reading a book on the coastal hauntings may tell you this stories, nothing beats hearing them told to in dramatic fashion in the very spot where it happened.

This tour sometimes attracts a large crowd, particularly during October and the Friday the 13ths, so it is recommended that visitors call the reservation line at 910-794-1866.

There is also a haunted pub crawl that begins downtown, and leads through ghost stories in local pubs. ID required for proof of age.

Cost $12.00 per person, or $10.00 for students, seniors and military. Children 6 and under are free. Cost for haunted pub crawl $15.00.

I have been on the tour several times, each time I visit Wilmington. Every time has been unique, and every time has been just as good as, if not better, than the last. I have seen a strange flickering light in one spot on my first tour, but that’s the limit of my personal sightings. Ghosts are not guaranteed.
