Poem About Mature Innocence
the innocent heart

by jennifer pumo
give it up to the innocent heart
run away with the ribbons
and dream like you were never told they were just that
dad broke you with his broken heart
and mom let you cry all alone
and you learned
yeah learned how to guard yourself
and you learned
yeah you learned how she must have felt
and i know i have no witness
cocoonless solar existence
but i tie it all together with love
give it up to the innocent heart
grace the proverb with your tongue
free yourself from the stories you didn’t write
and your hand
let it bend for the sage inside
give it up to the innocent heart
run away withthe ribbons
and dream
dream
