Have You Seen MySpace: The Movie?
David first posted his film on his personal website, but 3 days later it showed up on the popular site, Youtube.com. 30 million-plus views later, he has landed a development deal with MTVU and even received a personal email from Tom Anderson, MySpace co-founder.
Some highlights from the movie include:
The Bathroom Shot – The film opens with a teenager in his bathroom snapping photo after photo of himself with a digital camera. The best shots will inevitably end up on his MySpace profile. What’s funny about this is that before MySpace came along, I don’t know how many people actually took photos of themselves in their bathrooms. Yet, this is something that I, along with who knows how many other MySpace users, can totally relate to. The opening scene ends when the teens mom walks in on her son in the bathroom, only to find him in a somewhat compromising situation.
The Bulletin – In this scene, a MySpace user finds out what happens when he doesn’t repost a bulletin. We’ve all received bulletins claiming that if we don’t re-post the bulletin in 7 minutes we’ll have something terrible happen to us. In the movie, a guy has a rather unfortunate accident involving a drunk deer hunter and…circus peanuts after he deletes a bulletin, without re-posting it.
The Top 8 – Everyone wants to be in your Top 8. In fact, some people take their placement in your Top 8 (or lack of placement) very seriously. This scene involves a couple arguing over who is and isn’t on the other’s Top 8.
Other scenes include a blind date, where viewers are introduced to the now-famous Yeeta, and an interesting and humorous take on how Tom’s (MySpace’s most famous friend) profile picture came to be.
Why did his movie take off like it did? David’s movie comes at a time when MySpace popularity is at an all-time high. Anything with “MySpace” in the title is HOT. Teenagers and adults alike are on the popular social networking site. And although his movie is obviously the work of an amateur and only 11 minutes long, it strikes a chord with a lot of people.
David Lehre is currently making the rounds with industry execs who are trying to figure out how to capitilize on the Internet’s popularity.
So watch MySpace: The Movie for yourself and let me know what you think. If you’re a MySpace user, you’ll probably love it…and if you’re not on MySpace, why not?
