Dating is a totally modern innovation in human relationships. Back in Biblical times all marriages were arranged by the various families in the clans of the local villages where the majority of the population lived. Marriages were viewed as more than just the uniting of a man and a woman (actually the participants were just getting used to the changes to their physiology caused by the onset of puberity at 12-14 years of age.) Clans and their relationships to each other within their own tribes were one of the major considerations when arranging marriages. The other big issue was property; what could the grooms family exchange for the bride’s family loss of her labor? Someone would have to take on her share of the cooking, cleaning the tent, tending the vegetable garden and caring for the chickens, washing clothes and carrying water from the well three times a day. (Always accompanied by her brothers lest she be viewed by strange men.)

Dowery or the Bride Price was the term used to describe the exchange of property for the young woman’s hand in marriage. How different things are today, maybe. in Beverly Hills, California a modern-day matchmaker, Orly Hadida, still plys her ancient trade. Instead of gathering at the water well to find out which family has a daughter ready for an arrangement, for which the matchmaker would receive a commission, Orly, The One And Only Matchmaker has her website.

Ms. Anne Majerik, a widowed social worker from Erie, Pa., was serious about meeting the right man to share her life with, so serious that she paid a $50,000 fee for “Three years of introductions to extremely successful and highly educated, charismatic, kind, down-to-earth romantic men who enjoy a life of fine dining, traveling and leisure.”
These men would be “Focused on having a monogamous relationship and earn way above $1 million per year and have an estate worth up to $20 million.”

From 2002 to 2004, and paying $75,000 more in fees the grandmother, who was widowed in 1999, still had not received any “appropriate” introductions and Orly would not return her phone calls. Was this “Finding The Perfect Match” that Orly promised in the contract that she has her clients sign? Orly states on her website We are not a dating service, we work thoroughly and meticulously, so please get in the habit of communicating with me.”

Ms. Majerk had lofty great expectations that considerably narrows down the available pool of prospective men to date. Donald Trump has recently become a new father again so he is off the list. You can imagine the poor (!) guys meeting Ms. Majerk for a “it’s just lunch” type of initial meeting. Perhaps they were instructed to bring their personal bankers along on the date to verify the extent of their “estates.”

As she is a social worker I wonder what values she brings to the job; the industrial base of her state being sold-off by her prospective marriage partners for the benefit of their foreign-trading companies and their stock prices, causing massive unemployment in the “Rust Belt” with the resulting social problems and family dislocations that make a few Bad Dates seem insignificant.

Ms. Majerk claimed in her lawsuit that she was “psychologically damaged by the process and demanded compensation. In Biblical times an unconsummated marriage would result in the return of the bride to her family and the bride price would be returned, much to the families shame; or in some cultures another wife would be taken into the extended family, options our legal system doesn’t allow us. In this case the contract that Orly and Ms. Majerk entered into promised “A HighEnd Matchmaking Service” and “We have a staff of six people” didn’t allow the jury to excuse their not returning Ms. Majerk’s calls. The jury awarded her $2 million, even though she was a difficult customer, her great expectations being more than the average persons requirements. The trial now over Orly will have more time to spend on her other clients: Orly prefers to spend time with each client on a one-to-one basis, in the old fashioned tradition of matchmaking.

As for us, single but searching moderns, we have infinite choices, from MySpace to www.solvedating.com to network with or not, whatever we are most comfortable with. There is a lot of interest in Relationships as evidenced by the many television programs devoted the the topic, and the magazine racks are filled with new ones every month. I am not recommending these particular sites, these are for informational purposes only.
