Kid Friendly Sheppard’s Pie

Sheppard’s Pie traditionally uses lamb and vegetables. My mother changed it up a bit over the years and it’s been a family favorite since. Now as a grown adult I have used this recipe with my children, and a family favorite is enjoyed by a new generation! You can double the recipe and make a large batch that will be much sought after leftovers. Our family calls this Sheppard’s Pie, but as you are making it, you may think of it as a cheeseburger pie with a little something extra. This is the dish that I asked for every year on my birthday growing up! I always double this recipe as it goes fast.

Ingredients:
Ground meat (can be beef, turkey, chicken or combination) (1.5 pound)
Baking Potatoes for mashing (6 potatoes)
Shredded Mozzarella cheese (1 bag)
Spaghetti Sauce (1 large jar or 2 medium jars)

1. Get a large lasagna sized baking dish and lightly coat it with a non-sticking spray. You can also choose to use a foil tin that is disposable when the meal is done. You will still coat this with a light coating of non-sticking spray. I make a huge lasagna sized foil and we have leftovers for a couple of days.

2. Brown the ground meat and season to taste with garlic and onion salts. Season to taste.

3. Drain the ground meat and pour the large jar of spaghetti sauce over the browned ground meat, saving about ¼ of the sauce for later.

4. Set aside the ground meat.

5. Cook the potatoes in boiling water until soft.

6. Mash the potatoes using milk and butter. Season to taste.

7. Layer the remaining ¼ cup of spaghetti sauce in the bottom of the baking dish.

8. Add a layer of the seasoned and sauced ground meat to the dish.

9. Add a layer of the mashed potatoes right overtop of the ground meat.

10. Add a layer of shredded mozzarella cheese overtop of the mashed potatoes.

11. Add another layer of meat over the cheese, and then continue again with the potatoes. Again top the potatoes with the mozzarella cheese.

12. Bake at 400 degrees for 45 minutes. Let the top get a little browned and crusty for extra taste.

13. Enjoy an easy family meal that the kids will ask for time and time again.
