Students Awarded for Citizenship

REGION 4 – Two lucky students were rewarded for their good acts on June 14 at a special assembly at Valley Regional High School.
Eleventh-grader Jeffrey “J.R.” Howe won the citizenship and responsibility, CAR, campaign award, Valley High Principal Alan Frishman said.
In the CAR campaign, staff members at Valley who noticed a student being a particularly good citizen gave them a ticket. The more good works the student did, the more tickets he or she received.
Students “competed” throughout the year to get the most tickets by doing many good works so it would increase their chance to win the grand prize.
Howe earned five tickets throughout the school year for various good acts observed by teachers.
Frishman said there were 583 total entries in the drawing and the winning ticket making Howe the grand prize winner was based on the nomination by English teacher and Chester resident Peg Meehan.
The grand prize was a used 1989 white BMW 320xi with 54,000 miles donated and prepared for the road by Roseanne and Tom Pipoli, parents of VRHS senior Tom Pipoli, who will be attending Connecticut College in the fall.
“It was a personal donation from the family,” Principal Alan Frishman said who added the family would own their own car dealership in late July.
That dealership, Frishman said, is the Balise Toyota Nissan and Kia in Warwick, R.I.
After proper paperwork is processed, Howe will be able to drive the car home in about one to two weeks.
When asked, Frishman said, the CAR campaign definitely improved the climate of the school and increased student morale.
“I thought it was very successful,” Frishman said, adding “I would like to have it next year and would like it to be an annual event.”
Also, on June 14, a second raffle drawing consisting of students who signed up for one of Valley’s three Red Cross blood drives.
Social Studies teachers Cory Arnold choose the winning ticket belonging to twelfth-grader Alex Hargraves.
Hargraves won a $50 I-pod gift certificate.
