Online libraries are changing the way students study. There was a time not long ago when you headed to your local library when you had a report due in school. You had to find the right books, read through all the information and hope you had everything you needed. Times have changed, people are now turning to the internet for their research needs. The amount of time needed to research has been drastically cut due to online libraries.

One online library worth checking out is the The Internet Public Library or IPL.org. This library offers a vast amount of information. Not only does it offer traditional information but it also offers lists of other resources such as lists magazines and what each one is about. There are special categories such as blogs about library science, travel, medical and many others. There are strict requirements for these blogs to be accepted. IPL also offers information on home schooling, associations, political sciences and law.

With such a vast array of information at your fingertips you don’t have to leave home to find research material. Dictionaries, thesauruses, almanacs, famous literature and more can all be found online. Dictionary.com is one such site that you can find relevant information quickly.

Literature.org and Project Gutenberg at Gutenberg.com offer free unabridged text versions of classics from authors such as Mark Twain, the Bronte sisters and Charles Dickens. Being in the public domain, these books are added to their sites for you to download and enjoy.

There are approximately 120,000 libraries in the United States including special libraries like governmental libraries, armed force libraries and more. Libraries are found in schools both public and private are the most abundant accounting for over 90,000. There are approximately 15,000 public libraries. Encyclopedias are another source for articles and research. At encyclopedia.com you can find over 50,000 articles. Wikipedia is a new type of library that uses collaborative information and people can edit. Be aware that not all sources may be confirmed. Wikipedia contains more than 1 million articles.

One brick and mortar library worth writing about is the Library of Congress found in Washington, DC. The Library of Congress was founded more than two hundred years ago! It is the world’s largest library with a collection numbering over one hundred and thirty million. Twenty-nine million of those items are books. Other collections are photographs, recordings, maps and manuscripts.
