Thwart Those Pesky Fleas

Fleas love pets for all the wrong reasons they love to bite and reside inside your pet’s fur and skin. In the summertime, those pesky creatures are out in full force biting your pet and you. What you may not know is that for every one flea you see on your pet there are hundreds if not thousands more. And they are not just on your pet, they are in your carpet, your house, the yard, basically all over the place. If you have a pet, you have a nice size congregation of pesky fleas surrounding your home. Fleas are extremely difficult to get rid of and it seems almost impossible to keep them from finding your pet and irritating the heck out of them. But there are a number of things you can do to thwart those pesky fleas and help you and your pet get some relief.

A bath is one of the best things you can do to help thwart the number of fleas on your pet. Try using a flea medicated shampoo that is specific to what type of pet you have. In other words, don’t use a flea medicated shampoo for a dog on a cat. If your pet hates baths, like mine does, try using a dry shampoo, which foams without water. Try to bathe them as often as possible. To help thwart those pesky fleas try using a number of herbs. Mix a few drops of pennyroyal or eucalyptus oil into the shampoo. However don’t overdo it, a high dose of certain herbs can be dangerous to animals.

Comb your pet’s hair once a day with a flea comb by dipping the comb into soapy water, preferably with flea medicated soap or shampoo. This will help draw out the fleas. A good trick to use to thwart those pesky fleas is to douse your pet’s meal with a little garlic or brewer’s yeast. Surprisingly, many pets like the taste and when they belch it will give off an unpleasant smell running fleas away. Try using a flea dip, an insecticide solution where you dip your pet into the solution, which works much better than regular sprays and powders. Make sure you read the label carefully. Also, dips are pet specific.

Some small tricks to follow that will go a long way in cutting down on the number of fleas in your house. First, lay a trap for those pesky fleas to help thwart them. Plug in a night light and put a wide pan partially filled with water underneath the night light. Since fleas are attracted to standing water and light, they will leap right into your trap and drown. Make sure you wash your pet’s bedding at least once a week. Don’t let your pet roam around in every room, keeping them from going in every room will cut down on the number of fleas. Vacuum often scooping up fleas in the carpet and in cracks. Once you finish vacuuming, pull out the bag, secure it tightly in plastic, and put it in a freezer or in direct sunlight. The heat or cold temperature will kill the fleas. Keep your house free from clutter, the more clutter the more the fleas will take up residence in your house. Finally, use a fogger or diatom these powerful methods will help thwart the number of pesky fleas in your house.
