How to Prepare a Hurricane Safety Kit for Your Home
The first thing you need to do is go out and buy medium sized water proof duffel bags. You can usually find these in your local stores in the camping section. Make sure that you purchase one for each family member. Now you will want to begin buying your supplies. You will want to pack one pair of shoes. Sneakers would probably be best since after a storm their is usually a lot of debris left lying around. Make sure that each duffel bag has sneakers for that particular family member. If you have very young children you should make sure that their bags have at least two pairs of socks and sneakers as well. For the children’s bag you should pack at least two pairs of pants, shirts, underwear, and t-shirts. Make sure that you get at least one size bigger than what they currently are. You will also want to pack at least two of the same for yourself and your husband. If you have infant’s and toddlers that are still in diapers then you should pack at least one or two days worth of diapers and wipes in the bag. In the event of a hurricane it may take a day or two for you to get the extra needed supplies.
For young ones you will want to also pack jar’s of food in their emergency bags. If they still eat baby food you should pack at least two days worth of baby food in their emergency bags. If your children are older then you can bag small bags of food. Some good items would be cereal which you could place in little baggies. You should also pack some bottles of water in their bags. To complete the kids bags you want to add at least one flashlight, and a box of first aid items in each child’s bag. The box of first aid items should contain some band aids, some ointment, and some gauze. This will complete the kids emergency bags. For your emergency bag, you will want to pack some snacks for yourself such as granola bars or something that will not expire or go bad. Also make sure that you add a couple bottles of water for yourself. You will also want to include the following: antibacterial hand wash, band aids, peroxide, gauze, wipes, at least one blanket for each bag, flashlights, extra batteries, small radio.
The items indicated above should be enough to help your family in the event of a hurricane. You will be able to survive at least until you reach a shelter or until help arrives to get you additional supplies. You may not think that it is necessary to prepare an emergency bag for your family members but it really is better to be prepared rather than unprepared.
