Honeycomb

My cousin Mary and I, as kids, had great fun-
Running around at Grandma’s out in the sun,
We would walk in the grass-in bare feet
Playing out in the field – What a great treat!

We met an old man who lived off the alley,
His house was down the hill, kind of in a valley,
He beckoned to us to follow him to his yard
And what we saw there threw us completely off-guard!

He had hives and hives of bees, buzzing around-
Some of them were even on the ground,
He said, “You girls wait right there now-
And I’ll bring you a treat that will make you howl!”

So he brought some honeycomb for both of us-
As we cried out, “Thank you Mister Gus”,
It was, oh, so warm and oh, so sweet,
We never had had such a sumptious treat!!

We went down to his yard many times after that-
Never had to worry ’bout a snake or a rat,
“cause those bees would sting them so hard
They would be lucky to get out of That yard!
