My Summer Vacation to Tybee Island, Georgia

For the past two summers my husband and I have taken our girls on vacation to Tybee Island, Georgia. We were originally looking for a new vacation spot close to home, but not too close. I decided that I wanted to go to a beach since I had never seen the ocean. So I started looking at my Georgia state map to see all of the beach locations available.

I had heard a few bad things about Jekyll Island and St. Simon’s Island seemed too popular. Then I came across Tybee Island. Neither my husband nor myself had heard of Tybee before. So I jumped online, as I always do, and started an internet search for information on Tybee Island, Georgia.

I found several websites about Tybee Island and things to do while visiting there. Along with many links to hotels, condominiums for rent and several rental houses. I finally found a hotel that looked interesting to me, Ocean Plaza Beach Resort. It has it’s own resturant with room service, which is a great thing to have when you are taking three rowdy girls with you.

So last year I booked a room at the Ocean Plaza. Our room was on the ocean side with it’s own private balcony and two queen size beds. I figure that if you are going to go to the beach then you should at least be able to see the ocean anytime you want to see it. We enjoyed sitting on the balcony just listening to the waves splashing against the sand.

Tybee Island has a beautiful beach with lots of activities. There is a Marine Science Center, lighthouse, dolphin tours, historic site seeing, museums, kyaking, nature trails, bike riding and lots of shopping. From our balcony you had a great view of the Pier and Pavillion. Under the pavillion there are some shops, venders and a few vending machines. Once you are finished there you can continue out on the pier for some fishing. I loved seeing people reel in those beautiful exotic-looking ocean fish.

After lots of sight-seeing, some souvenir shopping and eating out at my husband’s favorite resturant, The Crab Shack, it was time to go home. We ended our vacation absolutely in love with Tybee Island, Georgia. We vowed to come back for our next summer vacation. We had so much fun and so many peaceful moments there. We had even visited the neighboring city, Savannah, Georgia.

Early this year, I made reservations once again at the Ocean Plaza Beach Resort. They had just finished a major remodel a few months before and it definitely showed when we arrived. The rooms were just beautiful. They had remodeled everything with bright new colors and lots of new furniture. Again we had our own private balcony, all of the rooms have a private balcony, and we were ocean side. Unfortunately their resturant does not get a good review from me. They had classed it up TOO much. It was absolutely not as kid friendly as it had been the previous year. My second daughter even ended up with a burn on her arm by a candle sitting on the table. I was not impressed and the prices seemed to have skyrocketed since the previous year. The food was good but, in my opinion, it was not worth the amount of money we paid for it.

We were there for the Fourth of July this year. Tybee Island had a spectacular fireworks display. It was much better and a lot longer than any I’ve ever seen. There was a band playing on the pavillion that you could hear from our balcony. The venders were all set up under the pavillion to sell their wares. It was all very festive and had me reminising about my teen years and how much fun I would have had at this place when I was younger.

We enjoyed Tybee Island just as much this year as we had last year. The main difference was that this year we could relax a little more since we had already been there once and we knew where we were going, what we had already done and the things we would like to do this time.

We will be going back to Tybee Island again next summer. Only I think next time we will try a different hotel to spice things up and have a little more variety. It’s always fun to try new things. We may even find a hotel we like better.

I highly suggest Tybee Island, Georgia to anyone who is considering going to the Georgia coastline. It is beautiful (see my photo that accompanies this article) and full of so many activities. Don’t forget to check out my husband’s favorite resturant also, The Crab Shack.

Happy Vacationing to everyone!!
