What is Bipolar?

Bipolar is a brain disorder that causes people to have highs and lows. This means a number of things. They can have different mood swings, different types of energy (good or bad) and it affects the way they will function in a normal life. Bipolar can hurt numerous things. Ranging from relationships, behavior and work during school or jobs. Can ever result in suicide. Bipolar is a life long disease that can be treated but will always be a part of their lives.

What causes Bipolar?

There seem to be no direct causes of Bipolar. Although it does seem to run through your DNA. This disease can be passed down from generation to generation but it does not always. Some times people may have this and not even know it as Bipolar is very hard to diagnose correct. There are many factors that run together that cause Bipolar and there are studies still in act trying to find any key points that are possible.

Is Bipolar treatable?

The answer to that is yes. There are many ways to treat this. Although it will take some time. Of coarse all treatment does not work the same on everyone. If treated correctly A person with Bipolar can lead a pretty normal life. Even with correct treatment, Outbreaks are still going to happen although probably not to often. Medication is the key treatment. Almost all people with Bipolar will have to take some type of medication. What type of medication depends on the person. Psychotherapy is another form of treatment that most people will receive. This is a form of talk therapy. A psychologist will work with you and your family and this is greatly helpful. If these two don’t show much help there is a third option. That is an electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Plainly put they shock your brain. You usually lose all memory for about a week or two. And there are several treatments that have to be done. I was once told that it is like defragmenting your brain.

As you can see this is a very serious disease. With proper treatment though a normal life can be lead. There are numerous support groups on and off line. I recommend joining one of them so you may learn about this and how other people with this can lead a happy normal life.
