Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

This title is on the Sony Playstation 2. It was created by Konami. The mastermind behind this game is Hideo Kojima. The game takes place during the Cold War. America was attempting to rescue a scientist by the name of Sokolov in Russia. The operation ended in failure. At the same time as the rescue failed, a research facility was bombed in a nuclear explosion. Russia accused America of bombing the facility because the American aircraft was detected on radar.

Khrushchev, the Soviet Union’s leader, told the American president that in order to prove their innocence they will have to send an agent and assassinate an American defector known as “The Boss” who joined Russia. The defector turns out to be the agent’s mentor. In this game you will be playing as Solid Snake’s genetic father, “Naked Snake”. (Known as Snake in the game.) The mission is to assassinate The Boss and her 4 cobras.

The Boss is Snake’s mentor and she taught him everything he knows. Snake has to search inside of himself and find out what is more important, “His feelings towards his mentor or his mission”. The cobras are legends from the battlefield. It is said they each have an emotion to carry into battle. The 4 cobras are, “The Fear”, “The Pain”, “The End” and “The Fury” and The Boss is known as “The Joy”.

Like the previous Metal Gear Solid games this title is also stealth/action. But a few things are different in this game such as, instead of just plainly hiding from your enemies you have to use camouflage to blend in with your surroundings. Many different patterns of camouflage are available throughout the game. You will also have to walk softly because the guards will hear the crunching of leaves as you run. Another welcome addition in this game is that you have to survive in the wild by hunting and killing animals to keep your stamina up.

As your stamina starts to drop Snake’s performance will start to decrease. For example, your hands will shake more when aiming due to fatigue and your strength to hang off ledges and chokehold the enemy will also decrease. You can also use animals you have captured to distract the guards. You can capture a snake and throw it at a guard so you can sneak past him or poison him by throwing a scorpion at him.

The graphics of this game are great. The cut scenes and the game overall is beautiful. The game will suck you into it as you sneak, interrogate and hunt. The character models have been nicely made. Every gun, item and thing in this game looks authentic. The animals are no exception. All the animals have details that are accurate to their real life counter parts.

Sound is also very authentic in this title. When you shoot an AK-47, it will sound exactly like a real one and the blast effects are also pretty close to real too. The dialogue is clear and easy to understand. When you grab a guard from behind and interrogate him, sometimes he will sound so scared that you will feel like laughing in his face for being a soldier.

The controls are fairly nice. They are not as responsive as they should be. It will take some time to get used to the button response time of the game, but it’s nothing too serious. Pressure sensitivity is involved with this game. For instance, if you grab a guard with the circle button you will have to maintain the pressure of the circle button, because if you grab him and press the circle button too hard afterwards you will end up slitting his throat, which will end up getting a wee bit messy.
