Turn Body Pillows into Cartoon Characters

Go to a discount department store and you’ll find many cartoon character pillows, like Spongebob, Dora, and even Scooby-Doo. Check the price tag and hold on to something to keep from falling over, though, because those kind of novelty pillows don’t come cheap. Small ones run about ten bucks, larger ones, even more. Go to the pillow section of the same store and you’ll find huge body pillows for around ten bucks, and each of the pillows makes two cartoon character pillows.

There are a couple of different ways to make the pillows. One way is to choose a pillow with the basic color of the cartoon character, like yellow for Spongebob or brown for Scooby-Doo. Cut the pillow in half and sew each one closed. You will lose a little of the stuffing while cutting, but try to tuck most of it back in before stitching closed.

You’ll decide how extravagant you want the pillow to be. If you decide to sew on arms and legs, for example, you’ll have to find socks or knee-his that you can stuff to make the limbs, which is quite a lot of extra work. If you decide merely to dress the pillow to look like the cartoon character, it will be much easier, and you can use scraps of fabric to do so.

Look at pictures of the cartoon characters, in books or magazines, then design little clothes that will go onto the cartoon characters. Designing might sound difficult, but it’s really a matter of cutting out shirt or pant-shaped pieces of cloth, and using fabric glue to attach them. Another way to give the pillow fashion is to use kids’ clothes, saved from your own children, or purchased at a yard sale.

Fabric stores often sell novelty fabrics that will have your favorite cartoon character printed on it. This is a great resource for making the face and hair, as well as some of the clothing, if the images are printed large enough. Simply cut out the shapes and use fabric glue to attach them to the pillow.

A second way to make the cartoon character pillow is to cut them in half and cover them with a pillowcase which is the basic character’s color. This technique works well for the 2nd pillow which you’ll likely want to make into a different character. Use the character fabric to cut a large character out and sew or glue it to the pillowcase. Stitch the pillowcase shut after putting in the pillow.

Use colored felt to make ears, if needed, or colored yarn to make whiskers. The colors and outfits you choose will make all the difference in how the cartoon character ends up looking. Pay close attention to things like hair bows, suspenders, collars and such, since those can be the finishing touches that makes your cartoon character pillow look true to form.
