Dreamgirls: Another Broadway Show Makes Its Way to the Silver Screen
What attracts me most to the movie is the fact that it’s a musical. In the past great Broadway musicals have been able to make the transistion from stage to screen without losing any integrity, spunk, excitment or thrill and I’m hoping that Dreamgirls will be successful in doing that. Unfortunately for me I was never able to see the stage play, it debut on Broadway in 1981 and I was born in 1980! But I have been exposed to the soundtrack which includes the powerhouse ballad “And I Am Telling You, I’m Not Going!”
The story Dreamgirls revolves around an all black female singing group, The Dreamettes, and shows their journey from unknowns to superstars with everything such a journey includes; love and broken hearts, jealousy, betrayal, riches and even forgiveness and redemption. With this storyline it’s no wonder the play won over 10 Tony Awards.
I can’t wait to see what director Bill Candon does with it on the big screen. And if the making of trailer is any indication, it’s going to be an amazing movie.
