When it comes to our summer fun insect repellent is a major issue for most of us. Not only are there major problems with viruses and disease but also just the plain old allergic reaction that we all get from the bites themselves. The itching the burning the relief that we can never quite grasp we all want to be rid of the pests that feed off of our bodies. But is one product really better than another? I will be showing you all of the information so that you can make an educated decision about the best choice for you and your family.

OFF! vs. CUTTER Insect Repellents: What is DEET?
According to the EPA, “DEET (chemical name, N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide) is the active ingredient in many insect repellent products. It is used to repel biting pests such as mosquitoes and ticks, including ticks that may carry Lyme disease. Every year, approximately one-third of the U.S. population is expected to use DEET. Products containing DEET currently are available to the public in a variety of liquids, lotions, sprays, and impregnated materials (e.g., wrist bands). Formulations registered for direct application to human skin contain from 4 to 100% DEET. Except for a few veterinary uses, DEET is registered for use by consumers, and it is not used on food.”

OFF! vs. CUTTER Insect Repellents: Questions About the Toxic Levels of DEET
Can using DEET during my pregnancy cause birth defects? Even at toxic levels, there was no increase in birth defects seen in the majority of animal studies. There have been case reports describing adverse pregnancy outcomes following the mother’s use of DEET during pregnancy; however, no connection was made between the adverse outcomes and the exposure to DEET. There have been no human studies regarding first trimester exposure to DEET. Based on the animal studies, it appears that exposure to DEET would not significantly increase the risk for birth defects.

OFF! vs. CUTTER Insect Repellents: The Comparison, Which is Really Better?
Although OFF is considerable more expensive it does not work any better than CUTTER. It comes down to what you would be willing to pay. After taking my family to a heavily wooded lake, my dog brought back fleas like you wouldn’t believe. My son had always attracted the insects to an obscene amount. If there was a flea within a mile they would find him and after a few hours it looked like he was coming down with the Chicken Pox. However, we got so irritated by the fact that he was irritated that we bought Cutter instead of the usual product we used to buy which was Off. Upon using it we saw no difference at all the fleas stopped biting and that was that. Neither stung nor stank (any more than usual) so we saw that the performance was equal. Ever since that summer we have used Cutter.
