New Drugs Hitting the Market: Advair HFA, Generic Zonergan and Generic Cefzil Liquid and Zoloft

There are some new drugs hitting pharmacy shelves, asthma sufferers, mothers and those suffering from epileptic seizures take note!

GlaxoSmithKline has announced approval for the drug “Advair HFA” This is similar to the plain Advair Diskus, excluding that is friendlier to the environment. It can be used long term, but cannot replace fast acting inhalers when an attack hits.

Teva Pharmaceuticals announced the approval for generic Zonergan, which is used to treat epileptic seizures. It reduces the frequency of epileptic seizures. These seizures generally affect a certain part of the brain and the person remains conscious during the seizure. Zonisamide, the generic name cannot be taken alone to prevent these seizures. It must be taken with other anti-seizure medications (such as Lamictal) in order for it to prove effective.

Cefdinir powder for liquid suspension has received approval as well. Cefzil is a cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat mild or moderate bacterial infections in the throat, respiratory tract or sinuses. This approval is a relief to those suffering without insurance for their families.

Zoloft is finally becoming generic. Teva Pharmaceuticals and Roxane laboratories have received permission to develop generic Zoloft. Teva takes claim to the tablets, Roxane the liquid form.

Some interesting over the counter products have been released as well. In simple terms, they are “full of flavor”

CranAssure is a new product by Pharmavite. It takes cranberry extract (the delicious Ocean Spray brand) and pairs it will vitamin c, beta-carotene and selenium. Cranberry extract for decades has been proven to significantly reduce the chances of a urinary tract infection.

Nicorette Gum now has a new flavor “fruit chill” The company says the taste is very pleasurable and will enhance the experience of quitting smoking.

A new mouthwash for children by Listerine has hit the market as well. Just like those fun pink tablets you would receive in the dentist office as a child, the mouthwash will “highlight” where your child should brush. What does this mean? Clean, healthier teeth!
