Quick and Easy Styrofoam Decor Projects

Styrofoam is lightweight and versatile, and there’s many different projects you can make from it, but most people think of Styrofoam for use in crafts and other small projects. But Styrofoam, ordered in very large pieces, can make some fabulous home decor items that are impressive and easy.

Purchasing Styrofoam in craft stores will cost you an arm and a leg, and it’s difficult to get Styrofoam in large pieces at most local stores. There are some online places that offer huge Styrofoam pieces at a much better price, though.

The main thing, when it comes to making Styrofoam decor, is to shape and paint. It’s that easy. Several items from around your house can be used to shape the Styrofoam. Electric knives, waxed serrated knives, and even hammers can assist you in shaping the Styrofoam.

Purchase lengths of Styrofoam which are 6″x6″ blocks. These make great ceiling beams for a fraction of what wooden ceiling beams would cost. After hammering the Styrofoam in various places to make it appear more like the wooden beams you see in the stores, then painting it dark brown, it’s nearly impossible to tell it from a regular ceiling beam.

Purchase slabs of Styrofoam to make shelving. If you use regular shelf brackets you can hold many things that aren’t too heavy, such as picture frames or some collectibles. Paint the Styrofoam to match the decor in the room you’ve selected for the shelving.

Use Styrofoam sheets to make cornices for your windows. They’re much easier to hang than wooden ones, and if you cover them in fabric, no one will ever know they’re not wood. Just glue the front, top, and side pieces together, then cover with batting and fabric, using regular white glue.

Use lengths of Styrofoam, in your choice of thicknesses, to make frames for wall hangings, posters and other pictures. Paint with silver, gold or even copper paints to make them look metallic.

Use a small piece of Styrofoam to decide on colors, patterns and textures. Use things from around the house, like a water bottle, hammer, toothpicks, saucers and other items to make indentations and intentional mars on the Styrofoam – it’ll look much nicer that way.

Once you’ve discovered the magic of Styrofoam you’ll be making all kinds of things for your home and no one will know how little you paid for the beautiful new decor pieces.
