Unique and Personalized Wedding Dress Options

Here comes the bride all dressed in umm, black? Yep red, yellow, and purple too. These days weddings are as unique as the couple getting married. So why not make a statement of your individuality with your dress too? In the past if you were a bride, you wore white. If you were a bride twice over your wore something else, if you even dared to have a wedding. In the past several years I have seen many brides wearing many different styles. I attended a Halloween wedding where the bride and groom were both dressed as vampires.

Although, this was bit shocking for me it did truly reflect the personalities of the couple. Later, I attended a wedding were the bride, a first timer, wore a magnificent dress in what appeared to me to be yellow, the bride corrected me as the color was called Candlelight. Her groom wore a kilt to express his heritage. It was unique and elegant all in the same. Another wedding I attended the bride and groom were dressed in jeans with dressy upper halves. They both have great physics that the jeans accentuate and her lace wrap top made her ensemble very sexy and oddly dressy. Still others opt to get married in bathing suits, scuba gear, and various costumes to represent a favorite hobby or sport.

Being a recent bride myself I was faced with the daunting task of finding the right dress. Just like you, I am an individual. I have my own personal style and I decided I wanted to own that and show it off at my wedding. My husband and I happen to be very casual people. On a regular day you are more likely to find us on our boat in flip flops and shorts and since we live in the south we can live this way 9 months out of the year. When the winter comes we reluctantly pull on socks and a sweatshirt. Shoes are bondage for me and I don’t own a sole pair of heels. With that said we wanted to be more traditional at our wedding but with a flair. Our wedding was to be outside in a garden at night, candle light being the luminary. I knew that this was my time to shine and get all dolled up and I wanted to take advantage of that for the most part while being realistic that it was an outdoor wedding.

So off to the dress shops I go with my mom and sister in tow. I already knew that I would be wearing flip flops under my dress and I also knew that a lacey number wasn’t for me. I wanted a very simple, non-ornate dress with red accents on it. My bridesmaids were wearing red and I wanted to coordinate. I had seen a dress online that fit the bill and selected the store which had the dress in stock. With family in tow we made our way to the fitting rooms. They brought the dress out, I tried it on, and it fit just fine. Just what I was looking for. Then it happened. my mother started to cry, oh no not tears of joy, but sadness and disapproval. How could her little girl want to wear such a plain dress with red all over it? The shameâÂ?¦the injustice! Oh my. I protested, it’s long and it poufs out, it’s sliming, and it’s priced oh so nice. She was having none of it, this was her first wedding. She and my dad had a wedding but it was small and just included family. Her dress was a quick fix dress that hit right at her knees. I thought that that was trendy and cool for the times as miniskirts were just becoming popular. But no this was not so, apparently it was the only thing in her price range at the time. I was to have an expensive and elegant dress that she, um I mean me, could be proud of. I ended up with a beautiful long white lacey dress with a train that dragged on the ground as I walked down the dirt aisle. I loved that dress, it was stunning and I felt like a princess.

There are several questions you should ask yourself when deciding if an “out of the norm” dress is right for your big day. You probably already know if you fall into that category of bathing suits, star trek costumes, or football jerseys. However, if you want a more traditional wedding but with personal flair added you may not be certain how far to go. You may not be so sure if you want to dare a different color, don cowboy boots, or go for an unusual style. Here are a few questions to ask yourself when thinking about your wedding day style.

1) How will your family and guest react? If the grandmothers are aghast, your moms cry and guest leave wondering about your sanity will you care? You may want to find show some dress choices to your loved ones and see their reactions or just take them shopping with you. In reality a wedding that is supposed to be all about the bride and groom has a lot to do with the parent, grandparents, and guest. Some people may be more strong willed than myself. I am a people pleaser and the thought of others being distressed about my dress choice wasn’t worth it.

2) Will you be happy with the style you chose down the road? If you are thinking of something trendy or unusual, think about how you may feel about it in say 20 years. Would you be embarrassed for your kids to see pictures of you in the dress? Styles change and so does personal taste. You want to feel gorgeous and satisfied on your big day but you also want to be able to cherish the memoriesand pictures.

3) Can you customize your attire in other ways? So maybe a plaid dress for a Scottish wedding is just too much for you. Can you customize your attire by adding a plaid sash or shoes? If even that’s too bold, think about having the initials of you and your future husband embroidered in plaid colors and having it stitched inside your dress.

After it’s all said and done every bride is beautiful and unique on her very special day. Even if you end up in a the same long white lacey dress I did, it was chosen to express who you are. Remember, the people coming to your wedding are there to celebrate you as a couple. They will no doubt see you as an individual whether you were a purple prom dress or a one of a kind Wang. Pick your dress and be proud, and no doubt when you walk down the aisle towards your future husband with all your family and friends reveling in your beauty you will feel like a princess!
