Take Action for Horses on Capitol Hill – National Organization Urges Citizens to Act

The Humane Society of the U.S. (HSUS) will hold a national rally for horses on Sept. 5th from 10 to 11 a.m. in Washington, D.C.

The event will take place at the Cannon platform at the corner of Independence Avenue and New Jersey S.E.

After the rally the organization will be holding their annual HSUS Lobby Day for Animals from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The group will be meeting in the 121 Cannon House Office Building. Congress returns from its August recess on Sept. 5th.

On Sept. 6th a National Call-In Day for Horses will be held.

HSUS say their best predictions estimate that the U.S. House will vote on HR 503 on Sept. 7th.

“Our opponents claim that horses like these must be slaughtered for their own good,” said Jake Oster of HSUS. “We don’t allow foreign-owned slaughter plants to set up shop here for dogs and cats so that their flesh can be peddled overseas.”

Oster said that most Americans are shocked to learn that horses are slaughtered for foreign food exports and that it is a myth that ending horse slaughter will result in unregulated and or longer horse shipments. Nor will a slaughter ban increase abuse and neglect cases, he said.

Last year almost 100,000 American horses suffered and died in foreign-owned slaughterhouses so their flesh could be flown to Europe and Asia for human consumption according to HSUS.

You can help pass the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (H.R. 503) by calling the Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121 and ask for your Representative’s office.

Current guidelines do not protect horses transported to slaughter and horse slaughter is not humane euthanasia, according to HSUS literature.

“Horse sanctuaries are not limited and do not lack adequate care and the government will not be burdened with unwanted horses,” states the organization’s website.

According to HSUS, banning horse slaughter will not harm the environment.
