A Shattered World

We are the children of the light
We are the angels of the darkness

Looking at you with eyes closed
I can only wonder,
Imagine what it must be like to see
The color of your face, your eyes, your mouth
But I’m a dreamer in a shattered world
While light and dark forces struggle for the pearl
Long ago swept out to sea

We are the children of the light
We are the angels of the darkness

Inventing words on a page
I can only wonder,
Imagine what it must be like to attain
Some lofty thought that penetrates the rants of madmen
But I’m a dreamer in a shattered world
Where men inflict pain and death and peril
Because they hate this life

We are the children of the light
We are the angels of the darkness

Writing line after line
I can only wonder,
Imagine what it must be like to receive the acclaim
Of stodgy scholars with their rules of form
But I’m a dreamer in a shattered world
Who writes without the labor
Of making every curlicue fit

We are children of the light
We are the angels of the darkness

Standing on the corner
I can only wonder,
Imagine when you’ll come walking by
In the little outfits you wear
But I’m a dreamer in a shattered world
Saying if I saw such a fine girl
Could I loosen the tongue of love?
