Science Lesson for Grade 2 – Parts of Chickens and Bean Plants: Part I

Parts of Chickens and Bean Plants: Part I
Science-Grade 2

I. Objectives:
2.1.1 Recognize that living things are made up of smaller parts
The student should be able to label 5 parts of a chicken after whole class instruction
The student should be able to label 3 parts of a bean plant after whole class instruction

II. Materials:
 Diagrams for over head
 Guest Speaker with chickens
 Construction paper
 Markers/Crayons

III. Procedures:
Using a chart on the board, have students list all the things they know about chickens and bean plants
When the students have listed several things about chickens and bean plants begin the discussion about the different parts of chickens and bean plants
The discussion should include the comb, shank, wattle, ear lobe, and shoulder of a chicken and the flower, pod, and seed of a bean plant
Show the students the 5 different parts of chickens and the 3 different parts of bean plants using diagrams on the over head
Show the students real bean plant
Have the students take magnifiers and look closely at the flower, pod, and seed parts of the plant
Have the students illustrate the bean plant on construction paper
Remind the students to label the flower, pod, and seed
Tell the students that you have a special guest today and this guest is going to show them a real chicken
Have the students look at the chicken and try to identify the comb, shank, wattle, ear lobe, and shoulder of the chicken
Tell the students that they are going to learn more parts of the chicken tomorrow
Show the students the beak, eye, toes, breast, hock, and vent (these are the parts of the chicken that I will discuss tomorrow)
After all the students have looked at the chicken have them illustrate a picture of a chicken
Remind the students to label the comb, shanks, wattles, ear lobes, and shoulder
Have the students write 3 things that they have learned today in their learning logs
The students should write something other than the 3 parts of a bean plant and the 5 parts of a chicken

IV. Assessment:
The assessment that I used in this lesson is the chicken and bean plant labeling. The students should have illustrated a chicken and a bean plant. The students should have also labeled the comb, shanks, wattles, ear lobes, and shoulder of their chicken and the flower, pod, and seed of their bean plant. I will also have the students write in their learning logs to evaluate what they have learned other than the 5 parts of the chicken and 3 parts of a bean plant.

V. Modifications:
For my high level students I will have them write the purpose behind the different parts of the chicken. The students will need to choose 2 of the 5 parts to evaluate. For example, if the student picks the comb of the chicken the student will need to write why they think that the chicken has a comb. The student will write their evaluation on the bottom of their chicken illustration.

For my low level students I will have them label 3 of the 5 parts of the chicken on their construction paper. The students will still need to illustrate the 5 parts of the chicken but they will not be required to label all 5 parts.
