Great After School Snack Ideas for Kids

Kids love to snack. If you want to steer them away from the usual salty chips, here are a few ideas to put variety in their menu. Some of these recipes kids can make with adult supervision, and some you will just want to take charge of making yourself. These are super fast and easy and sure to get rave reviews. These ideas will also teach your children to get involved in the kitchen and open up their variety of food choices as well.

Orange Banana Sorbet

1 ripe banana
1 cup frozen concentrated orange juice

Place in food processor and chop on high speed. Eat sorbet with a spoon.

Fruit Kebabs

Take fresh fruit such as banana chunks, fresh strawberries, grapes, sliced kiwi and melon and orange slices and slide onto a wooden skewer. Make several kebabs and serve them as a family movie snack.

Peanut Butter Apples

Wash and core apple and cut into wedges. Set aside.

Take 2 tablespoons of peanut butter and one teaspoon of honey and melt in a microwave safe dish until warm and creamy.

With fork, eat apple wedges dipped into melted peanut butter mixture. A great energy treat that is tasty and kids love.

Butterscotch Granola

Take 1/4 cup butterscotch chips, 2 tablespoons peanut butter and melt on stove top or in microwave safe dish. Pour over melted mixture over 1/2 cup granola cereal and top with 1/2 cup cold milk. A sweet and crunchy mix of texture and flavor that will have your kids smiling.

Cream Cheese Apple Slices

Wash and core an apple. Slice apple into rings and top with softened cream cheese. Sprinkle with a few raisins for a sweet and healthy snack.

Orange Ice Cream Smoothie

In blender, combine 1 cup cold orange juice, 1/2 cup vanilla ice cream, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 2 ice cubes and 1/3 cup milk. Process on high speed and enjoy in a tall glass with a straw.

Cheesy Trail Mix

Take your child’s favorite sweet cereals, such as Corn Pops, Fruit Loops, Cheerios or Chocolate Krispies, and mix with peanuts or roasted sunflower seeds, cheese nip type bite size crackers, little pretzels, apple chips or banana chips and raisins. Store mixture in snack size food storage plastic bags

Apple Banana Cheese Wraps

Cut apple into chunks and ripe banana into thick slices. Wrap each with a slice of processed cheese and fasten with a toothpick.

Chocolate Grand Slam Cereal

Break up the graham crackers into bite size pieces and place in cereal bowl. Take a Chocolate candy bar and using a carrot peeler shave the chocolate into curls and let them drop on top of the graham crackers. Add just enough milk to wet the crackers and eat with a spoon.

Waffle Ice Cream Sandwich

Toast 2 waffles according to package directions. Slice ice cream with a knife to stick between the 2 waffles and press together. Sprinkle with confectionary sugar and eat immediately.

Nutty Frozen Bananas

Peel ripe banana and cut lengthwise in half. Roll each half into honey and sprinkle with granola cereal or chopped nuts. Lay on wax paper and freeze for 15 minutes then eat.

Extra Fruity Fruit Dip

Ingredients:
1 cup vanilla yogurt
1 tablespoon honey
1 cup canned peaches, drained
3 tablespoons of the juice from the canned peaches

Combine ingredients in food processor or blender and mix until smooth and creamy. Serve immediately for dipping with fresh fruits or raw carrots.
