Quick Rustic Decor That’s Cheap
Decorate the front porch or deck with old things you may have at home or could find at a yard sale. A good example of such a thing might be an old rusty wagon or maybe even a wheelbarrow. Plant flowers or greenery in them and set them outside.
Braided rope is another thing that costs little but makes a big statement. Outline doors with it, form it into a monogram and attach it to headboard or footboard, or arrange the rope into throw rugs. After braiding the rope, begin rolling it on a flat surface until it takes on the shape of a braided rug. Use rubber cement to attach the rug to a rubber backing.
Place hurricane lamps, here and there, around the room. The lamps are available in rustic-looking types that give a warm glow at night. Fill a boot with flowers and set on the floor in a corner. Or, use a hat instead of the boot and set on a night stand or dresser.
In the kitchen you can add a rustic pan holder quickly with little money. Wrap chains around a tree branch and attach the chains to hooks in the ceiling. Use “S” hooks to wrap chains around the branch and allow them to hang down. Add a second “s” hook on the end of each chain to hold pots and pans.
Pictures and artwork can make an ordinary room look rustic in no time. Cut pictures of woodsy scenes and place them in wooden frames. Or, make your own artwork by using wooden squares or circles from a craft store. Glue river rocks to the wood, attach wrought iron craft pieces to the wood shapes, or cut magazine pictures and decoupage them to the wood.
Gingham fabric can be used to quickly change decor. If you have no machine, use fabric glue to hem the material, then place it on night stands, kitchen table, or use it to make tie-backs for your curtains. You can easily cut gingham checked fabric into squares and sew or glue to solid-colored curtains, bedspread, or even lampshades.
Make quick shadow boxes to hang on the wall or set on a shelf by using an empty cardboard box. Arrange a burlap piece in the bottom of the box. Put anything you want to in the box: wooden shapes of trees, copper sheet shapes of horses, or just dried flowers. Glue a picture frame with glass to the front of the box. This is a great rustic look that is easy to accomplish.
Use stencils and paint markers to add a border to wooden furnishings, mirrors, picture frames, door knobs and more. The stencils are easy to use and paint markers come in many styles and colors to suit your decor.
Use black or brown vinyl to cover doors and drawer fronts. Glue a piece of foam to the door or drawer, then use staples to attach the vinyl piece. Use decorative tacks to hide the staples. The vinyl can be ordered in styles that have a leather look for a fraction of the price of leather. Check with local upholstery shops for leftover vinyl and you’ll likely get a good deal on the price.
Adding rustic touches to a room doesn’t have to mean lots of cash. Check craft stores in your area for even more ideas. You’ll find plenty and be on your way to changing your decor in no time.
