Annual Fundraiser Proceeds to Benefit Lung Association

The Valley Ranch Association has selected the American Lung Association to be the beneficiary of proceeds from the Fifth Annual Pumpkin Dash and Fall Festival.

The event will be held at the Cimarron Park Recreation Center from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 201 Red River Trail.

A 1K Fun Run will take place at 8 a.m. and awards will be given out at 10 a.m.

Volunteers are also needed for the event in the areas of Race Registration Set-Up, 6:30-7:30 a.m., Route Set-Up 7-7:45 a.m., and Pumpkin Patch Photo Area, 9-10 a.m., taking Polaroid (provided) photos of kids.

A $20 registration fee is required from midnight Oct. 16th through the 20th at 1 p.m.

A $100 gift certificate will be awarded in the 5K to First Place in male and female overall and male and female masters.

The course is fast and flat and this year’s race will use ChampionChip timing.

Packet Pick-Up Dates are Oct. 18-20m 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Run On! Coppell, 680 N. Denton Road in Coppell.

Fall festival hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will include a pet costume contest, kids/adults Halloween costume contests, kids’ gaming area (.25 per game), and pumpkin patch photo area for $1.00. There will also be a chili cook-off.

Valley Ranch is considered a premier Irving neighborhood, according to a local website. Set on 2,500 acres, the community is home to 30 district neighborhoods and 21 apartment communities. The Ranch has been under continuous development since the 1970s.

There is a $15 early registration fee for the race through midnight on Oct. 13th.

The American Lung Association is the oldest voluntary health organization in the country, founded in 1904 to fight Tuberculosis.

“My father-in-law died of lung cancer from smoking for 40 years,” said Dr. Allen Henderson of Arlington. “He was only 62 years old and suffered a great deal. Additionally, two close friends also died of cancer – a male 57 years old and female 58. They were both wonderful human beings and teachers who had a positive impact on many young people over their lifetime.”

According to Cancer Compass, modern three-dimensional radiation therapy has been proven to be more successful at curing lung cancer than older two-dimensional radiation therapy for some patients with early stage lung cancer, says a new study in the Sept. 1st edition of the International Journal of Radiation Oncology *Biology *Physics, the official journal of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO).
