Halloween Costume Ideas: For Ghost and Gobblins Alike

It is that time of year again. With the fall comes many special days to celebrate and among those is Halloween. And we all know that means that everyone has to come up with great Halloween Costume ideas. If you’re unable to go out and rent one, or the one you want is taken, go back to making the wheel and use a little imagination.

Let’s start with Halloween costume ideas for the little tykes. My favorite character on the planet right now is Abby Cadabby from Sesame Street. She is a little fairy girl that aspires to be a Fairy Godmother when she grows up. To be Abby, we’ll need pink tights and leotards, a lilac tutu, some wings, false eyelashes and a magic wand. That’s pretty simple. Since everyone may not want to be a little fairy girl, what little kid doesn’t love Crayola Crayons?

Then why not dress the part? With a small amount of brightly colored felt, and contrasting black felt for trim, inexpensive iron on block letters, and a regular party hat with elastic, the cutest little tyke in the world can be converted to his or her favorite color crayon. If you don’t have a sewing machine, for a one-night stint, hot glue or Stitch Witchery works great (I know because I tried it in a pinch and it works). With a couple of sewn or fabric glued seams, and holes cut out for arms, adding the black felt trim around the top and bottom of the costume (as is on the crayons) the costume is almost complete.

The party hat mentioned is going to be covered with colored felt with a strip of black felt trim for the finishing touch. The elastic on the party hat makes it easy to maneuver while the kids are collecting candy. You can also fashion a hat out of poster board covered with felt. Let’s return to nature. One of the easiest costumes to make is bunch of grapes.

Purple or green leotards and tights with contrasting balloons blown up and pinned onto the leotards works great. Use a flat beanie, a small amount of brown and green construction paper or felt to create several leaves and the stalk to sit on top of the head for a finishing touch, and there you have a bundle of grapes. Want something scarier? How about a spider? Use black tights and leotards (sweat suits can be used in lieu of tights and leotards for comfort on all costumes requiring such) and cut the legs off of old black panty hose. Stuff the legs with cotton batting or newspaper and secure with safety pins. For antenna use pipe cleaners dipped in black shoe polish or color a day ahead with a non-toxic black marker or black watercolor paint. Secure antennae to a headband or individually with hairpins.

Teddy bears, bunnies, and puppies are easy to make with sweat suits. Bunny, bear and puppy ears can be made with a little cardboard, some wire and covered with felt. For tails use the legs of tights and pantyhose stuffed with cotton or paper and attach with a pin. Now my favorite for little boys is Sponge Bob. Go to the fabric store and buy a square of foam and cover it with felt or better yet get the egg crate foam used for beds and dye it in yellow Rit Color. It looks more like Sponge Bob’s body. Secure two pieces for the back and front, cut out a hole for the face and arms and the little man is good to go.

Teenagers are a lot easier to dress for Halloween. An easy popular costume is a Punk Rocker. Gel up the hair, paint up the face, throw on some wild jewelry, grab an instrument and you’re good to go. How about a Rapper? Lower the jeans, put on a beater (undershirt), throw on a little bling, grab a microphone and go. If you want a posse have your boys dress the same way. Let’s do Wall Street? Put on a black suit, black shades, a nice valise, walk through the crowd with attitude with your cell phone in your hand acting the epitome of self importance ignoring everyone while speaking loudly on your phone and you have achieved the look. Let’s do Paris Hilton and Nicole Richey.

All you need are hip clothes, designer bags, blonde wigs, lots of attitude and conceitedness, two little puppies, flash a little cash and there you go. Don’t forget the red carpet, the velvet rope and a friend dressed as a Paparazzi photographer for props. Let’s face it Hollywood is open game. I fully expect to see a whole lot of K-Fed and Brittney as well as J-Z and Beyonce this Halloween.

Now let’s look at costume for adults. The ultimate for the male Halloween costume idea is of course McDreamy from Grey’s Anatomy. All you need are scrubs, a pretty smile, beautiful dark locks and of course sex appeal. My favorite this year is a group of adults dressed in really fabulous dance clothes traveling as a group to be what? You guessed it “Dancing With The Stars.” They of course all need to dance the part and have stars cut out and attached to their costumes. Another favorite for a female is a tight sexy dress, stiletto shoes, a blonde wig, red lip stick, a sexy walk and she must be singing happy birthday and carrying a birthday cake (it can be a prop of course).

Can you say Marilyn Monroe? And finally for the party pooper who really doesn’t want to go out anyway, a cardboard box will do just fine. Take a black marker draw a clock with a pendulum and hands and plop a white or gray wig on his head. He will be the one to tell every one when the night is over, because he is a Grandfather Clock. Let’s face it no one can argue with time, and besides who do you know who doesn’t respect a Grandfather? Happy Halloween!
