Top Ten Songs by Cake

A lot of people may not have heard of the alternative band Cake, but I’m willing to bet that you’ve heard one, if not more of their songs. In fact, I’m willing to bet that you’ll have heard at least one of these top 10 Cake songs. Some are a tad more obscure than others, but they’re all great top Cake songs, and if you hadn’t heard some of them, I highly recommend you check out some Cake. Without further ado, here is my list of Top Ten Songs by Cake:

10 – Carbon Monoxide – The fifth track on their most recent album, “Pressure Chief,” “Carbon Monoxide” carries a nice beat accompanied by a snazzy guitar riff. Throw in some dramatic backing vocals, and you’ve got the start of the top Cake songs.

9 – I Will Survive – Yes, it’s that “I Will Survive,” the former disco hit has been given the Cake treatment on this “Fashion Nugget” track. With simple, supportive instrumentals, the lyrics of the song really come to shine, and this 70’s throwback finds a home on a great Cake album.

8 – She’ll Come Back to Me – Also found on “Fashion Nugget,” this song is a great Cake song about hoping for the returned of a lost special girl. Definitely a Top Ten Cake Song.

7 – When You Sleep – The first entry from the “Prolonging the Magic” album, this Cake song carries similarities to “I Will Survive,” in that the song isn’t overwhelmed with instrumentals, allowing Cake’s offbeat lyrics to shine as a simple trumpet provides the slight instrumental oomph.

6 – Opera Singer – The first track on “Comfort Eagle,” this Cake song is, shockingly, about being an opera singer. Again, the band has great fun with the lyrics, and it’s a pleasure to listen to.

5 – Comfort Eagle – This titular song continues to wacky lyric tradition of all great Cake songs. It details a passÃ?© radio DJ doing his best to be hip and with it and failing miserably. Right in line with Cake’s philosophy of not trying to be what you’re not and being happy with what you are. And a great tune to boot.

4 – No Phone – The most recent Cake single, you may have heard this song performed on a variety of late night shows when the band appeared to promote “Pressure Chief.” The most noticeable feature of this song is the haunting synthesizer, another fundamental feature of a lot of top Cake songs. It is a little slower and more mellow, but a good song nonetheless.

3 – Short Skirt, Long Jacket – Now we’re getting into the top-notch Cake songs. This single off the “Comfort Eagle” album is poppy, catchy song about a man’s dream girl. Guess what? She wears a short skirt and a long jacket.

2 – Never There – One of my favorites (it must be if it made No. 2!), this top Cake song has a kicking bass line, as the band sings about the disappointment that comes with not getting enough attention from their special lady. Be sure to check out this one for some great Cake music. It can be found on “Prolonging the Magic.”

1 – Sheep Go to Heaven – My all-time favorite Cake song. Also on “Prolonging the Magic,” this song has got it all from Cake. Quirky lyrics, strong trumpet support, and strong backing vocals. Do not miss this song if you like anything Cake has to say. Definitely my favorite Cake song, and in my opinion, one of their best.

There you have it, the Top Ten Songs by Cake. They’re certainly not the Rolling Stones or the Beatles, but if you check out a few of these titles, I’m sure you’ll find yourself growing into a Cake fan yourself.
