Why You Should Visit Carolina Beach, North Carolina

As you pass over Snow’s Cut bridge, you will notice the intercoastal waterway below. This is where you can find many locals as well as tourists boating, tubing, water skiing, and fishing. On a pretty day, it can appear as if you’re looking down on a street full of water because of all of the boats going back and forth under the bridge. Coming off of the bridge and entering Carolina Beach, also known as Pleasure Island, you will see several restaraunts and shops in each direction you look. This island isn’t your typical beach, however. It goes from family fun beach and great nigh life to Fort Fisher battle field and 4-wheeling on the North End. No matter what other beach you have ever visited, none will compare to this one. This is a very friendly atmosphere and a great place to take the kids. It’s not as busy and fast paced as many beach towns, which can be great for a nice get away.

If you’re traveling with your family to Carolina Beach, you can do the obvious, which is go to the beach, but the fun doesn’t stop there for the kids. As you ride further into Carolina Beach, you will actually go into Kure Beach and Fort Fisher. In Kure Beach there is a great pier with plenty of games and pool tables for entertainment. The pier is a great fishing spot and you will find several locals and tourists here many times of the year. The kids can have fun and so can you! Fort Fisher offers a historic Civil War battle field. Two major battles were fought there, and many Union soldiers were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for their gallant participation in that fighting. Today only a few of the mounds are visible since much of the fort has been eroded by the ocean. It is a great place to take your children and for you to see yourself. They have a Civiil War museum located there as well. In Fort Fisher you will also find one of three public North Carolina aquariums. “Exotic Aquatics” is thier newest addition to the aquarium, the new collection marks a major excursion from the facility’s 29-year tradition of showcasing only those aquatic life forms found in North Carolina’s freshwater, coastal and open ocean habitats. Visitors discover venomous sea snakes from the tropical Pacific, visible from all sides of their 1,000-gallon cylinder. There are also fluorescent cuttlefish from the Red Sea or the Mediterranean, flashing against the dark background of their special tank, as well as beautiful Indo-Pacific lionfish and native scorpionfish, fluttering in their rocky lair. You will find more than a dozen colorful reef fishes of the Pacific coral atolls, all browsing for morsels within their living coral habitat.

The food on the island is really going to be more than you expect! There are a dozen fantastic restaraunts to visit. Freddy’s is an italian restaraunt located in Kure Beach right near the pier. You will be more than pleased with your food and service, not too many places can compare with Freddy’s extra thick pork chops, cooked to perfection! I would highly recommend this restsraunt above all on the island. Another great place to go would be the Deck House restaraunt, located in Carolina Beach, the outside can be mistaken for a church! The food is absolutely delicious and they have a really nice bar as well. I have to tell you, for both of these restaraunts you need to arrive a bit early, especially on weekends because they will sometimes have quite a wait time. Michael’s Seafood is located right as you come off of Snow’s Cut bridge and onto the island. Big screen TV’s and a fun and welcoming environment will have you ready to come back for more. The food is great and so is the service. Finally, my last top recommended restaraunt would be the Sea Witch, located near the boardwalk of Carolina Beach. This is a very lively atmosphere if you sit at the tiki bar and if you catch a good night, they may have live entertainment while you dine. If you want a little more peice and quiet, you can sit inside and away from the comotion. Great seafood served here! For a quick snack, check out Britt’s doughnuts located on the boardwalk. These are the best doughnuts you will ever eat! Krispy Kreme has nothing on the fresh, hot, delicious taste of a doughnut from Britt’s!

If you’re looking to have a night out and have fun, you have your choice between several unique bars. My top recommended place to go would be The Fat Pelican. It is located directly across from the Marriott Hotel. With the lights illuminating the outside, trust me, you can’t miss it! Once you enter into this bar, you may think you have entered another world. This is the most unique place I have ever stepped in to. They offer a walk in cooler to the customers with over 300 different types of beer to choose from. That’s right, you walk back and choose from hundreds of beers and then take your choice to the bartender. Aside from beer, they also serve wine and a few unique little drinks that you don’t see every day. If you’re a beer lover, this is your place, hands down! The owner of the establishment, Danny is just a wonderful person and great to get to know. He has been successfully running this bar for about 7 years and he does a fantastic job at it. He doesn’t tolerate any fighting or rowdiness in his bar, which is one thing that makes it so appealing. You can go there and have fun and not have to worry about your safety. I can’t say that about too many bars! The bar “goddesses” are the sure definition of beauty in three ways: looks, personality, and service! Also the local customers are very friendly and inviting. That’s the great thing about this beach as a whole, most everyone treats you like a friend. You can take a stroll on the boardwalk in Carolina Beach as well, they offer a hand full of bars to choose from. These bars can go anywhere from shooting pool to singing karaoke, or maybe even both, whatever you prefer!

If you want a great getaway filled with fun and excitement or just rest and relaxation, Carolina Beach, NC is the place to be. Once you go there you’ll always come back, at least that’s what all of the locals say! Whether traveling with or without the kids, plan your vacation today and make it the best little beach vacation you’ve ever had! Did I forget to mention that this is one of the few places on the eastern coast where you can still drive your 4-wheel drive vehicle on the beach? The North End is the spot on the weekends and in the summer time. You can camp out, go fishing, jet skiing, or just take a trip down to browse the point of the island that so many people love to go to. If you go on a holiday like July 4th or Labor Day, be prepared to have a load of fun as the North End will likely be bumper to bumper with people having a great time! You have to go to this beach for your next vacation, you will be so glad that you did!
