7-Eleven Announces They Will Stop Selling Citgo Gasoline

Here’s a riddle: What happens when you call the President of the United States a devil? You get kicked out of a convenience store. 7-Eleven announced that after a 20 year alliance with Citgo to sell its gasoline, it will be dropping the Houston-based subsidiary of the Venezuelan-owned oil company. Actually, 7-Eleven had been planning to make a move toward selling its own brand of gasoline well before Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez went before the UN and called Pres. Bush the devil. But a spokesman says that Chavez’s statements did absolutely nothing to cause 7-Eleven to consider possibly sticking with Citgo.

This can only come as bad news for Citgo, however. Ever since Chavez made his statements, there has been a grassroots movement to boycott Citgo gasoline, if not necessarily 7-Eleven. It will be interesting to see who wins out in the boycott war between those who are more upset by a foreign leader calling Pres. Bush a devil and those who want to boycott Exxon for making record profits in the same year-coincidentally, no doubt-that saw an unprecedented leap in gasoline prices following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.

Me? I’m sticking with Citgo.
