How to Organize Your Crafting Space
The first thing that you will need to do is really evaluate what space you are using to craft. If you are lucky enough to have a whole room devoted to crafting, you will have a lot of room to work with. If you don’t have as much space to work with, that is just fine. The whole point of getting organized is to make the most out of what you have to work with.
Once you have looked at your crafting space, you will need to designate certain areas for specific tasks. This will vary depending on what kind of crafts you do as well as how many different types. Just remember to make sure that each craft will have it’s own zone, so things simply won’t get mixed up. Try to have a plan of action before you start organizing.
When evaluating your crafting space, don’t forget to think about the walls especially if you have a smaller area to work with. Using the vertical space is a great way to maximize what you have. Most of the home improvement stores have tons of different types of shelving that anyone with a hammer and a nail can hang.
You will also need to buy or make some organizational tools. I recommend the plastic storage bins you can get from any store with a home-wares department. You are looking for containers that will be big enough for all of your needs, but not overly huge to where they takeover the space. You can easily get plastic drawer sets or plastic tubs for larger items like bolts of fabric. Once you have them purchased, it’s time to fill them up with all of your items. Remember to keep the items used for the different crafts you do separate. That way you know exactly where they are.
You can certainly reuse items that you have to help organize your crafting space. Shoeboxes are a perfect example. For me, I use a lot of yarn and fabric. I use shoeboxes to hold smaller amounts of fabric and yarn. And since we’re all crafters, we can definitely think of lots of ways to decorate the boxes so you can’t even recognize that they once held shoes. A couple other items you could use are old make-up cases for things like extra feet for your sewing machine and measuring tape and plastic containers that might have once held yogurt would be perfect for little supplies you have lying around. Use what you have. It will definitely save you some money.
The most important thing that I did was set a specific space for current projects. I purchased these wire stackable shelves and use those to hold what I’m currently working on. I recommend not to purchase too many of them and to use each one to hold only one project. This will definitely help you from having tons of projects that never get done.
Make sure that you also have a clean workspace. The open crafting space will let your mind wander with creativity. There’s nothing like dreaming up the wonderful things we can create there. Don’t let your creativity be stifled by clutter and disorganization.
Organizing your crafting space doesn’t have to be difficult. Have fun with it. Make sure that you make allowances in creating the perfect space for what crafts you love to do. Don’t forget that the purpose of your crafting area is to be creative and to make items that you love to have around you. Getting organized will only make it to where you will be able to do more of that and not have to look at the clutter.
