How to Decorate Easter Eggs

Making Easter Eggs over the years has become so commercialized with kits raging from pictures you can put on your eggs to Elmo kits. This year even though my kids are grown I decided that I want to do something from my child hood that was fun. So I started digging for ideas and old family ideas for decorating eggs..

Ok first let’s start with the basics cooking the eggs for hard-boiled.

Lay eggs in bottom of pan try not to stack them fill with water so its an inch over your eggs, put on high heat and bring to a boil, let boil for 12 minutes. Remove from heat and plunge them in cold water until you can grab them without burning your fingers.

Or you can one of my favorite ways of making Easter eggs by blowing them out with out breaking the shell, I always thought it was gross but a good time!

Using a needle, poke a small hole in the narrow end of the egg, and a slightly larger hole in the other end. Move the pin around to make sure you tear the membrane around the yolk. Now, holding the egg over the bowl, blow through the small hole. The egg will be forced out the larger hole and into the bowl. Make sure you rinse the egg well with water and let dry. Then decorate.

Using food coloring as dyes you will the following items

Food coloring
hot water
white vinegar
small bowls or cups (I use Dixie cups)
slotted spoon
cooking oil
soft cloth

For each color measure 1/4 tsp. food coloring in small bowl. Add 3/4-cup hot water and 1 tbsp. white vinegar to each color. Add eggs and allow to sit until they are the desired color. Remove with slotted spoon. Dry eggs with small amount of cooking oil and soft cloth.

For brighter colors on the eggs, add a 1/2 cup of cold water to the vinegar after the tablet has dissolved. For pastel colors, vinegar is not required, use 1/2 cup of warm water instead. The longer you leave the egg to sit in the dye the stronger the color will be.
Use a white crayon to write names and messages on the eggs before dying.
