How to Replace or Install a Dimmer Switch
Before beginning this project, be sure that you are taking the appropriate safety measures while working with electricity. Be sure to turn off the power to the circuit you will be working with by turning off the circuit breaker. In older homes, there may be glass fuses that must be removed. Always use rubber gloves to remove or replace these fuses to protect your hands.
You will also need a few basic tools and supplies to begin this project. Before you replace your dimmer, decide whether or not you will require a new faceplate. If you are installing one for the first time, you will need a matching faceplate. Otherwise, you should be able to replace your old faceplate after the installation is complete. You will also need a screwdriver, a voltage tester, and some wire nuts to replace the switch.
You can also use this set of instructions if you wish to remove a dimmer and install a regular light switch. Just buy the appropriate switch at your home improvement store. Also be sure to follow any manufacturer’s instructions during the installation process.
Begin by removing the old dimmer. The knob should be able to be unscrewed and then the faceplate removed. If there is no existing dimmer you only need to remove the faceplate to replace the switch.
Now that the switch is exposed, remove the screws that hold it into the box. Before continuing use your voltage tester to verify that there is no power in the circuit.
When you are certain the power is off, unscrew the wire nuts that attach the old switch to the wires from the box. If the dimmer was not installed recently, there may be electrical tape instead of wire nuts being used. Carefully peel off the electrical tape and unwind the wires if this is the case.
Unwrap your new dimmer and following the manufacturers instructions, attach the wires from the dimmer to the box. Use wire nuts to secure the connection. Next carefully replace the dimmer into the box and screw it into place.
Once it is in place, replace the faceplate by screwing it into place. Then screw on the knob and turn on the power to that circuit. Test your work by turning on the light. If you have followed all of these instructions your installation should be done and the light should be easily regulated by the turn of the dial.
If you have little knowledge of electricity or home improvement repairs, consider calling a handyman to do the job. Due to the simplicity of the job the cost should be minimal, but be sure to ask if you need to purchase anything beforehand.
Being able to control the intensity of the light emitting from your fixtures is an excellent way to change the mood of the space. Consider trying a dimmer for a light fixture you may consider a mistake. A few dollars spent on a switch can completely alter the function of the light fixture in your room.
