Homemade Cleaning Supply Recipes a Healthy Alternative that Works!

Have you ever read the ingredients and warnings on your cleaning supply labels? Every day we plunge our hands into some very toxic chemicals. Because we buy it from the store we think it is safe. Our skin absorbs whatever it comes in contact with, including those chemicals. Who knows what long-term contact with the skin, or breathing the fumes and vapors really does to us. Read those warning labels and you may feel differently about your cleaning supplies! There is another way. Stir up your own homemade, and much safer cleaning products. It is affordable, easy, and much more health conscious than the products you buy off the shelf. What’s really great, is they work! Let’s get started.

A great all purpose cleaner is Baking Soda. It is a natural deodorizer, has a little grit for scrubbing, and in fact you can even brush your teeth with it safely. For general cleaning purposes dissolve 5 Tablespoons of Baking Soda in a quart of warm water. Instant all purpose cleaner, great for the kitchen, and the bathroom. If you have some tough grime, like a sink or bathtub, just shake baking soda onto a damp sponge, scrub, and rinse. Instant squeaky clean!

Another great natural antiseptic cleaner is Vinegar. Simply add 1 cup of white or cider vinegar to 32 ounces of water in a spray bottle. If your bottle is smaller, just premix it in an old milk jug and label it, then pour the amount you need into your sprayer. This natural cleaning solution is great for cleaning mirrors, glass, counter tops, and other slick non-porous surfaces.

Clogged drains? Forget those caustic drain cleaners that are deadly if ingested or will blind if splashed into the eye. You have a home remedy sitting on your shelf that will keep your drains clean if you use it regularly. The idea is to avoid those plug ups by having clean drains. The recipe is simple: Put a tea kettle filled with water on the stove on medium heat. Pour Ã?½ cup of baking soda down the drain then pour Ã?½ cup of white vinegar down the drain, put the sink plug into place and go watch TV for five or ten minutes. When you hear the kettle boiling, go pull the drain plug and pour the boiling water down the drain very slowly. Be careful to wear hot mitts and don’t get burned or splashed. This is a great way to keep those drains clean and not need those heavy caustic cleaners. CAUTION: Do not use this recipe if you have already poured a caustic commercial cleaner into your drain, the combination could cause fumes or a chemical reaction that could be harmful. The recipe is meant to be a proactive method of keeping your drains clean so you don’t need those caustic cleaners.

Have carpets to freshen? Go get that baking soda again! This time you will use 1 cup of baking soda, ¼ cup of your favorite scented talcum powder (pick it up at the dollar store a great bargain), 2 tbsp. of corn starch. Mix it all up and sprinkle onto carpets. Allow to set for about fifteen minutes, and then vacuum it up. Your rugs will smell great.

An easy recipe for air freshening is to put a pot of water on the stove and slice up lemons and let it simmer. You can also simmer one of the following with two cups of water on low for a great smelling house: 1 teaspoon of vanilla, cloves, cinnamon, strawberry extract, raspberry extract, almond extract. Any of these will give your home a beautiful scent, naturally!
