Venetian Window Blinds – How to Quickly, Easily Clean

If your house is like mine, then practically every window is covered with slatted window blinds. Venetian blinds have become popular because they’re an effective way to keep the sunlight out, while adding a decorative appeal to any room. And, they’re inexpensive to buy if you look for them at your local dollar store, or you catch them on sale other places. The only problem with Venetian blinds is cleaning them. Since you have to clean each and every slat, the task can be time-consuming, as well as tedious. Unless you know some tricks of the trade, that is. Cloth- Covered Venetian Window Blinds
For the best results, you should read and follow the care instructions that came with your blinds, especially if they need to be spot cleaned. Cloth-covered blinds are normally swept off by using a vacuum cleaner and a soft brush attachment. You can use just a soft bristled brush, but I think that just puts the dust and dirt in the air where it will settle back down on your blinds.

Wooden Venetian Window Blinds
Again, for the best results, you should read and follow the care instructions that came with your blinds. I’ve had good results using a sheepskin duster. The lanolin keeps the dust contained in the duster so it doesn’t fly around in the air. First, close the slats so they are flat. Then, use the sheepskin duster to sweep across the slats in a horizontal motion. To clean the other side, simply use the adjusting rod to turn the slats over so the other side is facing you. Don’t forget to clean off the header of the blinds too!

To quickly, easily clean wooden Venetian window blinds that are really dirty, spray a soft cloth lightly with a commercial cleaning product that’s made for wood like PledgeÃ?® or EndustÃ?®. Either product will clean the wood, help protect it, and, it will leave behind a kind of invisible shield that will keep dust from collecting on the slats so fast.

If your wooden Venetian window blinds are really dusty and dirty, you can quickly and easily clean them by using your vacuum cleaner and a soft brush attachment. Place the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner hose and sweep across the slats in a horizontal motion. To clean the other side, again, simply use the adjusting rod to turn the slats over so the other side is facing you.

Note: Don’t use furniture polish if your wooden Venetian blinds are painted! And, never place wooden blinds in water.

Aluminum Venetian Window Blinds
The slats on this type of blind can be also be cleaned in a jiffy with a sheepskin duster if they’re just dusty. Close the slats so they are flat. Then, wipe the duster across the slats. To clean the other side, turn the adjusting rod to so the slats flip over.

You can also use your vacuum cleaner and a soft brush attachment to quickly and easily clean aluminum Venetian window blinds. Just remember that the thin metal slats bend easily, so you’ll have to be careful.

If the slats are really dirty and dusty, to quickly and easily clean them, you’ll need to close the slats and take the blinds down. I hold them over the bathtub and spray both sides of the slats liberally with WindexÃ?®. Then, I hang the aluminum venetian window blinds up above the tub for a few minutes. To rinse them, I spray both sides of the slats off with my shower sprayer. If dirty spots remain, use more WindexÃ?® and wipe across the slats with a wet sponge or soft, cloth.

I gently shake the aluminum Venetian window blinds to get rid of the excess water. Then I hang them over the bathtub again for several minutes until they stop dripping. I quickly and easily wipe over them with a dry, clean cloth, then I hang them back up.

And finally, after the aluminum Venetian window blinds are completely dry, spray a soft, clean cloth very lightly with a product like PledgeÃ?® or EndustÃ?®. Wipe over the metal slats of the blinds on both sides. This will put that invisible protective barrier on your blinds so they’ll stay cleaner longer!
