Patchwork Flower Pot: A Great Summer Craft for Kids
Materials Needed
clay pot, any size
white craft paint
paintbrush
colored streamers or tissue paper
scissors
white craft glue or white school glue (such as Elmer’s)
bowl or cup
water
acrylic sealer spray
potting soil, plants, and seeds
Directions
1. Using the white craft paint, paint the outside of the clay pot and the inside rim, at least two inches down, well below the soil line.
2. While the pot dries, cut the tissue paper or streamers into desired shapes. Each one should measure about one inch across.
3. When the pot is completely dry, mix equal parts of glue and water in a small bowl or cup. Stir the mixture until completely combined.
4. Using a paintbrush, paint the glue mixture on a small part of the clay pot. Add a piece of colored paper and paint the glue mixture over the top of the paper. Paper pieces can be overlapped, if desired. Since the glue mixture dries quickly, only work in small section.
5. Repeat steps 4 and 5 until the clay pot is completely covered.
6. When the pot is completely dry, spray with acrylic sealer spray. Allow the pot to dry completely.
7. After acrylic sealer spray has dried, fill the pot with soil and plant with desired plants or seeds.
Hints and Tips
1. Save colored streamers from birthday parties and used tissue paper from gifts for this project.
2. Paint the entire inside of the pot to use as a decorative storage container. Use the decorated pot to store pens and pencils in the office, spatulas and spoons in the kitchen, or hairbrushes and combs in the bathroom.
3. Paint the inside of the pot a color that coordinates with the tissue paper pattern on the outside of the pot.
4. Use a glue gun to attach a decorative bow to the pot.
5. Decorate several pots in seasonal colors, such as Red, White, and Blue for July or red and green for December. Change the pots as the seasons change.
