Windex with Vinegar Vs Vinegar

If you believe having vinegar added to Windex makes a big difference in alleviating the streaks that seem to always follow Windex, you would be wrong. When I first saw them advertising vinegar in their product, I thought I would try it because I have always been aware of the benefits of vinegar when it came to cleaning windows. I thought I’d try an experiment using Windex with vinegar versus plain vinegar. The results were hands down that plain vinegar won over Windex with vinegar.

When you use Windex with vinegar, there is less streaking than plain Windex but it is not that much of a distinction. Using plain vinegar with a light terrycloth towel or a newspaper will not only eliminate streaks but also the film on your windows. The film mixed with some of the cleaning chemicals is what causes the streaking. Using plain vinegar leaves it so sparkling clean that the birds might fly into your windows. Sadly, I recently had two birds fly into my glass window. Now this is not saying Windex with vinegar won’t give you clean windows. It will. However, plain vinegar speeds up the time and does a better job. Let’s look at the versatility of Windex with vinegar versus plain vinegar.

Windex with vinegar claims you can use it on glass, mirrors, sealed granite and marble surfaces, stainless steel, ceramics, and more. Out of what is listed, I’ve been told not to use any chemicals on my sealed granite by the people who installed it in my kitchen. Besides I don’t like putting chemicals on my kitchen granite counters because I place food on them. To me, that is a ridiculous suggestion for a usage of a chemical. I have tried using Windex with vinegar on my stainless steel but I do get streaks. They make special cleaners recommended for stainless steel. So I would not recommend using this product on those items.

Plain vinegar usage is so much more versatile. Not only can you cook with it or use it with salads, you can clean just about anything with it. In addition, you can remove deodorant stains on clothing, kill weeds, repel ants, clean and deodorize your garbage disposal, soothe a sore throat and sunburn , cleaning paint brushes, salt deposits around clay pots, and unwanted grass stains from your stepping stones, etc.

Vinegar is better for the environment and your health. Whereas, using Windex with vinegar puts out a warning to keep out of the reach of children and pets. It doesn’t list what the chemicals are that is mixed with the vinegar. When you open it up to smell it, you smell more chemicals than vinegar. This leads me to believe there is a small amount of vinegar in it. See, Vinegar is something our grandmothers used before we had all these chemicals. So I believe they put vinegar in it so that it brings back the authenticity of down to earth cleaning as our grandmothers use to clean.

The cost for Windex with vinegar compared to using vinegar by itself is four to one. For a gallon of generic vinegar it is about $1.50 compared to a half gallon of Windex with vinegar for about $3.00. To clean your windows with vinegar you would need a cup of vinegar to a half a gallon of water. So even though the cost for Windex with vinegar is four to one over vinegar, you get even more of a stretch in value with vinegar when it is being diluted with water.

As we are becoming more environmentally conscientious, we must think about these chemicals that are out there in the stores. What is more essential than our environment and health? Vinegar is environmentally safe compared to Windex with vinegar. The least amount of chemicals we use in our home environment will prolong a healthier lifestyle.
