Clean Carpet Without Chemical Based Products

When you use chemical-based carpet cleaners all you have to do is read the label to see warnings like “keep away from children and pets”. If you have pets or a child then you know that they spend a lot of time close to the floor and will be affected by anything you put on your carpet. Here are some natural ways to clean your carpet without resorting to harmful, more expensive chemicals.

If you have carpet in high traffic areas of your home consider buying some rugs. This will not only save wear and tear on your carpet but it will keep stains always. Rugs are usually easier to clean than carpet.

Baking soda and corn starch are wonderful to use when you need to clean up spills, vomit or pet messes. First you should use a paper towel and get up as much as possible that way. Then sprinkle with cornstarch or baking soda and let it sit for at least 3 to 4 hours. The baking soda or cornstarch will deodorize the spot and it will also soak up any excess liquid in the carpet. After you’ve let it sit vacuum it up.

Baking soda can also be used to simply deodorize your carpet. If you want to add some fragrance take a few drops of your favorite essential oil and mix it in with the baking soda. I would let it sit for a couple of hours and then use it. Sprinkle the baking soda or the baking soda with essential oil all over your carpet. Let it sit for 15 minutes and then vacuum up.

If you have white carpet then hydrogen peroxide would be a good natural cleaner. Some other carpets might tolerate peroxide but I would test a small patch first to make sure it doesn’t effect the color of the carpet. A few of the things it will clean up are red wine, ketchup, sauce, soup and blood. Club soda is another liquid that works wonders on carpet and is safe for pets and children. It will clean up red wine and almost any dark stains you might have.

Steam cleaning is a great way to clean your carpet without any chemicals at all except water. If you don’t own one then I would rent one maybe once every month or every two months. Steam cleaning will get all the dirt from your carpet and help with some stains.

Last but not least, try to simply use a paper towel or cloth to remove stains before reaching for anything else. Sometimes spills or messes are not as bad as you think. A small spill could be completely absorbed by a paper towel with no chemicals involved at all.
