How to Make Candied Sweet Potatoes

Potato was introduced almost four centuries ago in the region of Andes, and it has now become one of the integral parts of the world’s food. After rice, wheat and maize, Potato has become the fourth largest food crop in the world.

Potatoes are almost produced in every country of the world, and have close to 4000 varieties. Every category has particular culinary or agricultural characteristics.

Sweet Potatoes are one of the types of Potatoes, and are produced commercially in several countries of the world. Although the soft yellowish potatoes are often mislabelled as yams in some parts of North America, they are botanically extremely diverse from genuine yam.

There are many cuisines made up from sweet potatoes. However, every other food is put behind by the candied sweet potatoes due to its simplicity and mouth-watering look.

Most of the people make this course at Christmas and Thanksgiving. However, the recipe of making candied sweet potatoes is so simple that one can make this delicate and irresistible dish on any occasion.

Total time: 1 hour and 50 min
Yield: 8 servings
Utensils: Steamer, peeler, knife, drainer, baking dish and saucepan

Ingredients:
Yellow-fleshed sweet potatoes: 6
Butter: 1/2 cup
Packed brown sugar: 1 cup
Water: 1/2 cup
Salt: 1 teaspoon

    Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

    In the meantime, take a steamer and add water in it until its base is covered up to a couple of inches. When the water starts to boil, add all the yellow-fleshed sweet potatoes in it, and cover the steamer with its lid. Cook it for around 30 minutes or until the potatoes are tender. Take them out, drain all the water and set them aside to cool.

    Peel and slice all the sweet potatoes lengthwise into ½ inch slices, and place them all in a 9x13 inch baking dish.

    Take a saucepan. Add butter, brown sugar, salt and water in it, and place it over medium heat. When the sauce becomes bubbly and the sugar is completely dissolved, add all the slices of the sweet potatoes in it.

    Put the dish in the preheated oven for around 50 minutes to 1 hour. Do not forget to baste the sweet potatoes with the brown sugar occasionally.
