Winter Craft Ideas: Damask Snowflakes Serving Tray
For this project, you will need:
– Unfinished wood serving tray (available at most craft stores or online craft supply retailers)
Ã?Â- Medium grit sandpaper
– Soft cloth or tack cloth
– Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White
– Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Peek-a-boo Blue
– Anna Griffin “Blue Victoria” Print Scrapbook Paper (found in stores or online at Paper Addict)
– Pencil
– Several different sized snowflake shaped stencils
– Craft knife
– Self healing mat
– Sponge brush
– Mod Podge or other decoupage medium
– Damp paper towel
– Blue plastic craft gems
– Hot glue gun and glue sticks
– Newspaper or large drop cloth (fabric or plastic)
Due to the mess created in the priming and painting process, it is highly recommended that you first cover your work area with several sheets of old newspaper or a large drop cloth. Gently sand the unfinished wood serving tray with medium grit sandpaper. Wipe away any excess dust from the serving tray with a soft cloth or tack cloth. (This will help the primer and paint adhere smoothly, without bubbles or grit.)
Spray all sides of the wooden serving tray with Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White. Let the primed surface dry for about an hour before continuing. Coat the entire tray in four or more layers of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Peek-a-boo Blue. Allow the tray to dry for about four to five hours before continuing.
Lay the Anna Griffin “Blue Victoria” Print Scrapbook Paper flat on the self healing mat. Trace the different sized snowflake images onto the paper in pencil. Cut out the designs carefully with a craft knife. Apply a generous amount of Mod Podge or other decoupage medium directly onto the blue painted tray with the sponge brush. Place the paper snowflakes over the glue on the wood, smoothing the paper to adhere it to the tray. Wipe away any excess glue with a damp paper towel. Dry completely.
Apply a few dots of hot glue onto the tray and/or centers of the snowflakes. Adhere the blue craft gems and let them dry completely.
TIP: Get the kids involved by allowing them to create traditional paper snowflakes (folding and cutting of paper) without the stencils!
